Funeral service for Joyce Marie Debose Moore, 76, of Harker Heights, will be Saturday, April 2, at 11 a.m. at Simmonsville Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen.
Pastor H. E. Debose Sr., is officiating. Burial will be held on Monday, April 4, 11 a.m. at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 1, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Simmonsville Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen.
Joyce Marie Debose Moore, 76, transitioned from this earthly realm to join her heavenly father on March 25, at her home in Harker Heights.
She was the wife of Lt. Col (Ret) Earnest Ray Moore, Sr. and together they shared 51 loving years of marriage.
Born in Cameron, she was the daughter of James and Georgianna Debose. As a member of Lights Chapel Baptist Church she accepted Christ at an early age and continued to serve the Lord until her death.
In 1958 she graduated from O.J. Thomas High School where she was class president. After high school graduation she matriculated to Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas where she earned a degree in Sociology in 1963.
Joyce served in many volunteer capacities as she traveled extensively with her family over the years. As a member of the Officer’s Wives Club she was the director of the community thrift shop and hosted many activities to help others.
She taught English to students to assist them with a better understanding of the language. During the holiday’s she would have young soldiers away from home join her family for dinner.
As a Girl Scout troop leader she assisted the scouts with earning their badges and served as a regional director for the national organization. Most importantly she was a mentor. She mentored young men and women to ensure that they could find direction for their path in life.
In 1988 she became an active member of Simmonsville Missionary Baptist Church where she proudly served as the director of the Junior Church, Vacation Bible School director, Black History chairperson, Banquet Committee chairperson for the Pastor and Wife Anniversary Committee, Scholarship Committee, Publicity Committee, Mission I Auxiliary, deaconess, and original writer of the church newsletter – The Scribe
She is survived by her spouse Lt. Col (Ret) Earnest Ray Moore, Sr.; children Earnest Moore, Jr. (Tina), Michelle Garrett (Donald), and Denise Moore; grandchildren Ashley Payne (DeAngelo), Trenton Garrett, Taylor Garrett and Tiana Moore. She is survived by her siblings Ulysses Debose, Pastor Hubert E. Debose Sr. (Mildred), Charles Debose (Sandra), two sister-in-law’s, ReEtta Debose and Louvonia Debose; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, siblings Ruth Sterling (Ralph), Tyree Debose, Sr., James Debose Jr., Roy Cecil Debose, and Opal LaBlanc.
