Benjamin F. Zajicek
A member of the Greatest Generation, our Daddy was a hero who made the world safe for democracy. He served in the 2nd Infantry Division, (Old Indian Head), and took part in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Czechoslovakia. He was awarded the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, EAME Campaign Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Ribbon. He was also awarded the Gold Cross of Merit of the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic in the Highest Defense of the Czech Republic.
Benjamin F. Zajicek was born on May 6, 1925 in Buckholts to Frank and Lucy Zajicek. He attended Buckholts schools and married Ida Baggerly on Aug. 3, 1950.
He worked for Safeway Store for 40 years. He also operated a grocery store in Maysfield for several years and delivered meals for Bea’s Kitchen in Cameron. He was a past Commander of the American Legion and served on a number of boards of the First Baptist Church in Cameron.
He died on March 25, 2016 at Scott and White Hospital, Temple, surrounded by his loved ones.
Services were held March 27 at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.
He is survived by: his wife, Ida Baggerly Zajicek; his son Mike Zajicek (Joretta) of Cameron; daughters Margaret Zajicek Thweatt (Gary) of Cameron and Melissa Zajicek of College Station; grandsons, Josh Thweatt, Zach Zajicek (Rosa) and Nick Zajicek (Katie); the apple of his eye, great granddaughter Lauren Zajicek; his sisters, Leona Turner of Kerrville, and Carol Jean Baggerly (Wayne) of Waxahachie; his brothers Frank Zajicek (Connie) of Schertz and Woodrow Zajicek (Betty) of Tyler; by sister-in-law Raye Humplik (Joe Lee) of Cameron and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
Memorials may be given to the Cameron ISD Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 1214, Cameron, TX or to Bea’s Kitchen, Cameron, TX.
Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home of Cameron was in charge of arrangements.
