Workouts begin as fall sports season is just around the corner

Yoe quarterback Zack Andress goes through drills during the first week of two-a-day football practices.

Though it seems to be getting hotter by the week, that has not stopped the Yoe athletes from preparing for the start of a new sports season.

On Monday, over 150 Yoe athletes participated in the first day of summer workouts.

The Yoemen football team had 86 members out for the first day of practice. That number is expected to rise to around 90 once all physicals have been completed.

“The first day went really well,” said Yoemen head football coach and athletic director Tommy Brashear. “I was pleased with the kids attitudes. There was a lot of excitement for the the first day. I enjoyed their work ethic. If we keep working like that, then we ought to be pretty good.”

The football team will continue workouts throughout the month of August in preparation for the start of the season at Bellville on August 26. The Yoemen lost a good core of seniors from last year’s team, but if tradition continues, the program should reload instead of going into rebuilding mode.

“We’ve got some seniors coming back,” said Brashear. “I think they are doing a good job of taking charge and leading out there and that is what we need. I saw the beginnings of that today, which I really like and enjoy seeing. We have a lot of juniors coming up from the JV. They did real well, going 10-0 last year. The junior class is a good class for us. We are expecting big things from them.”

Cameron will participate in three scrimmages before the start of the season. The first will take place Saturday morning when the pads go on for the first time in the intra-squad scrimmage. The freshmen and JV will hit the field at 8:00 a.m. with the varsity to follow around 9:30 a.m.

Cameron will also host Lorena on August 12 and travel to Madisonville on August 18 for the final tuneup before the regular season opener.

Additionally, both the volleyball and cross country teams began workouts on Monday. The volleyball team, under new head coach Kamol Nohe, will see their first competition of the year on Friday morning with a scrimmage at Franklin (10:00 a.m.). The ladies will also be on the road for another scrimmage on Saturday at Harker Heights (10:00 a.m.).

Cameron will open the regular season by hosting Thrall and Lago Vista in a dual match from Yoe Gym on Tuesday, August 9 (4:00).

The cross country teams will begin their quest to Round Rock on Tuesday by participating in the Barton Springs meet and picnic. The season will get into full swing on September 10 when the runners travel to the Lexington Invitational.
