Thorndale band wins big

The Thorndale Band was recently honored as ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series 1A/2A Concert March State Champions.

There is exciting news for the Thorndale “Fightin’ Band from Bulldog Land” High School Band.

THS band director Michael Powers entered two of the band’s UIL Concert pieces submitted to the ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series competition in May 2016. This is a statewide competition for high school band in class 1A through 4A.

More than 600 recordings were submitted between all classifications. Each region sends their entries to another region in the state to be judged in a blind adjudication just like all-region auditions.

The first song was a concert march and the second song was a concert selection on the UIL list. Both of these songs were performed at the UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contest this year at Liberty Hill High School.

Both songs made it to the Area adjudication and the concert march advanced to the state adjudication, which was held in San Antonio at the Texas Bandmasters Association on July 21.

Thorndale was named OPS 1A/2A Concert March State Champions.

As a result, the recording of the band’s performance will be put on an OPS State Winners CD which will be circulated to all high schools in Texas that have a band program. The CD should come out during the fall semester. There will also be the opportunity to purchase a copy of the CD for those who are interested.
