Yoemen post shutout in blowout win over Jarrell

If there was a trap game on the schedule for Cameron, it was going to come this week in Jarrell.  The Yoemen had just come off a huge win on the road and it would have been easy to look forward to next week’s huge Battle of the Bell contest with Rockdale.

Those concerns were quickly erased as the Yoemen built a 26-0 half-time lead before coasting in the second half to win, 46-0.  The shutout was the first since 2013 when the Yoemen shutout Florence, 77-0.  With the win, the Yoemen to improve to 3-0 while Jarrell remains winless at 0-3.

Cameron got their ground game going in a big way in this 10-3A contest, rolling in 189 yards on 25 carries.  Tydrick Williams had 10 of those carries for 86 yards and three touchdowns.

“Week to week we don’t always know what we are going to get,” said Yoemen head coach Tommy Brashear.  “We don’t always get what we see on film.  They do different things to stop the big plays in the passing game.  It was good to get Williams going.  It was one of our goals coming in to get that running game going a little bit.”

Though it was not an explosive night through the air, the Yoemen were efficient with 148 yards on just 13 pass attempts.

Yoemen starting QB Zack Andress got it done with his legs early, scoring on a pair of short runs to give the Yoemen a 12-0 lead with 10:50 left in the second quarter.

At the 7:28 mark, Andress hit receiver Jordan Young for the biggest play of the night on a 53-yard receiver screen for a touchdown.

Williams scored a touchdown in the second, third and fourth quarters to put the game out of reach.  The junior running-back had dealt with injuries during the early part of the season, but is now healthy and contributing.

“It feels great being back on my team,” said Williams.  “I was on defense at first, but now I am on offense going back and forth.  I love running the ball wherever they need me.  We have a good team and we just have to work hard every week.”

Quarterback Caden Harris got valuable playing time in the second half and found receiver Garrett Roeder for 41 yards, putting the Yoemen up 39-0.

The Yoe defense, which forced Jarrell into multiple negative plays, only gave up 163 total yards on the night.

“Our defensive coaches always want a shutout,” said Brashear.  “You put those backups in there and you want to get them some reps and experience.  You never know, but you definitely wanted a shutout.”

Now the Yoemen can focus on Rockdale, which is also undefeated in district after picking up a 49-35 win over Troy.  Injuries have forced Cameron to rotate players around most of the season, but things appear to be heading in the right direction for next week’s game.

“We held out the DJ’s tonight trying to get them healed up and ready to go,” said Brashear.  “We have had a few bumps and bruises, but we are healing up.  I think we are going to be the closest to 100 percent than we’ve been all year going into this week.”
