Yoe band earns straight ones at Belton marching contest

The C.H. Yoe High School Marching Band participated in a marching contest on Tuesday from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.

The Yoe band, which is coming off another trip to the state marching contest in 2015, achieved straight division one ratings from the judges.

“Based on what I saw down on the field, the kids had a really great run through,” said head band director Craig George.  “The marching looked good and the playing sounded nice, so we will have to see what the video shows from up top.  Overall, the kids just did an outstanding job today.”

The performance was a good measuring stick for where the band stands, but it’s also useful in getting the students acclimated with the contest season in addition to seeing what will need to be worked out over the next few weeks.

“We have region eight contest here in two weeks,” said George.  “We always like to come to this contest because it gives the kids a chance to go through the process we have to go through.  We get a good recording and video of the show so we know what to work on. That is what we will take to work for the next two weeks in preparation for UIL on the 25th.”

Though the band has performed at multiple football games and now in their first contest of the year, preparation for the show began way before this point in time.

“We ordered the music back in January knowing it was going to be a military appreciation show and then we started the music back in May of last year during our spring concert,” stated George.  “Then, in the course of the fall we had started rehearsing percussion and color guard.  It’s a long process and all-in-all I would say it’s about eight months or so leading up to these performances in October.  It’s a lot of work and a lot of time, but overall I’m really proud of the kids.”

The Yoe band will now continue preparation for the UIL region eight marching contest set for Wednesday, October 26 back at UMHB.  The marching times for each band will be released at a later time.
