Yoemen respond with resounding win over Academy

For a lot of teams, there is that time in the season when the light switch turns on.  Cameron, which was coming off of a tough 80-54 loss to arch rival Rockdale just a week ago, was in a position where a response was needed.

On senior night from Yoe Field, Cameron (7-2/3-1) lit up just about every light possible in a crushing 63-0 victory over the Academy Bumblebees (4-4/1-3).

"We had a good week of practice," said Yoemen head coach Tommy Brashear.  "Our kids tend to usually respond well.  I thought we executed well on offense, defense and special teams.  We really focused hard on doing that.  We got beat in all three phases of the game last week, so we talked about taking pride in whatever you do.  We say our program is based on three things: class, integrity and total effort.  I felt like we played like that tonight."

The Cameron offense was able to pick and choose their way down the field all night, scoring seven first half touchdowns to build a 49-0 lead at the break.

Jordan Wells scored three of those touchdowns.  Yoe quarterback Zack Andress hit Wells for 12-yards in the game's first score, and then again for 63-yards to close out the first quarter at 22-0.  The senior also scored on a 41-yard run in the second.

"This is our last game on this field, ever," said Wells.  "It meant a lot to come out and win, especially dominating the way we did.  I’m just glad we came out and did everything we were supposed to do and win."

The offense ended the night with 465 yards of offense, with a majority of that coming in the first 24 minutes. A balanced, well executed attack was key as Cameron finished with 210 yards on the ground and 255 yards through the air.

"We do it in practice all the time," said Wells.  "We execute and try to practice hard every Monday through Thursday.  We practice how we play and we came out and we executed."

On the flip side, Cameron never allowed Academy to get into a scoring position at any point in Friday's game.

"It’s exciting," said senior defensive lineman Jesse Valdez.  "We just had to come out here and prove to everybody that we wanted it."

The Bees finished with just 109 yards on the ground on 40 carries.  The shutout was the second of the season, as just two weeks ago Cameron posted a 46-0 win over Jarrell.

"It’s one of the best feelings ever," said senior linebacker Eddie Luna.  "That was one of our goals today."

Cameron now has Troy on the road.  The game is significant because it is the last warm up for the playoffs as the Yoemen are off the final week of the regular season.

"We need to try and end on a good note," said Luna.  "We need to try and get another blow out and get ready for the playoffs now."

At this point, it's all about focusing on the task at hand for the 2016 Yoemen.

"The message this week is there is one more and we have to win that and finish the best place we can in district," said Brashear.  "With Rockdale winning tonight first doesn’t look real good, but we have to take care of business and take it one game at a time.  Next week it’s Troy, and that’s all we need to focus on.  We assured ourselves a playoff spot with this win."
