Yoemen end regular season with big win over Troy

In Cameron's final regular season game, the ultimate goal was to win and secure at worst the number three seed in the playoffs out of district 10-3A.

All of that was accomplished and more as the Yoemen used 36 points in the second half to pull away from the Troy Trojans, 56-20.

The game had it's ups and downs, but the Yoemen managed to grind through all of it, putting up over 500 yards of total offense on the night.

"That is the thing about our kids," said Yoemen head coach Tommy Brashear.  "Something bad might happen, but I felt like our kids hung through the adversity tonight and played hard.  I thought they played hard all night long.  We had a lot of different kids in there and they did a great job.  I was very proud of the way we responded to adversity."

Cameron had a pair of touchdowns in the first half, with one coming off the legs of QB Zack Andress on an 8-yard run and another with a pass from the quarterback to Iverson Westbrook for 51 yards.

What will not be overlooked is the pair of 29-yard field goals that kicker Eddie Luna successfully made.  The second kick was directly after a horse collar penalty, which extended the second quarter by one play and put the Yoemen up by a full two touchdowns at the half, 20-6.

"That's big," said Brashear.  "We feel confident in Eddie Luna as our field goal kicker.  We work on those a lot in practice and they make a whole lot more than they miss, whether it is a PAT or field goal.  We feel like we have two pretty good kickers there and we have confidence they will make them.  They came into play tonight and they did a good job of executing."

The Troy rushing attack did keep the game competitive for a stretch, mainly due in part to Riley Seiter's performance.  The senior running-back carried the ball 25 times for a total of 194 yards.  The highlight of the night was the 75-yard run to cut the Yoemen lead to 34-20 to end the third quarter.

Cameron's second half featured multiple high moments, which included Jordan Wells' 21-yard run and Kevondre Wesley's 85-yard interception return.

Freshmen Nico Vargas got his call at running-back in the third and busted a 51-yard run up the middle to put Cameron up 34-14.  In the 4th, Vargas picked up a Troy fumble, returning it 73 yards to increase the Yoe lead to 48-20.

"We had to move Nico up early in the year due to injuries," said Brashear.  "As the year has gone on, he has gotten better and better.  He is coming along well and he had a big game tonight on offense and scooped up the fumble on defense and ran it back.  He is a really talented kid and only a freshmen."

Yoe running back Tydrick Williams capped off the Yoe scoring on a 2-yard run with 2:10 left in the game.
