Porter Young Jr., 84, of Cameron, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016, in a Cameron nursing facility.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home with Gene VanNoord and O.E. Davidson officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Young was born June 25, 1932, in Gustine, Texas, to Edward Porter and Grace (Pennell) Young. He was a long time member of the Church of Christ and served a number of years as Deacon. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W. and D.A.V.
Mr. Young was a long time employee of KMIL Radio in Cameron. He was adviser for Radio Explorer Scout Post “54.” He started the first weekly polka program on KMIL in 1960. He served on the Cameron City Council; served as president of the Cameron Area Chamber of Commerce; served on the Board of Directors of the Cameron Urban Renewal Project and served on the Board of Directors of the Milam County Appraisal District.
Mr. Young served as the Veterans Service Officer for Milam County for 8-1/2 years. He then served as Milam County Tax Assessor- Collector for 15-1/2 years until retirement in 1996.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Edward Keith Young in 1961; and by two great-grandchildren, Carly Kirk and Josse Walzel in 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Armstrong Young of Cameron; son, Eddy P. Young III and wife Yvonne of Cameron; daughter, Judy Young Kirk and husband Mike of Cameron; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
