Ladies break even in Franklin, fall to Jarrell in 20-3A play

Over the weekend, the Lady Yoe played in their final tournament of the year at Franklin. The ladies broke even in two days and finished with a 2-2 mark overall. On Tuesday, Cameron fell to 0-2 in 20-3A play with a 8-5 loss to Jarrell. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Cameron but field conditions forced the move to Williamson County.

Franklin Tournament

Riesel (L 17-3)

In the opening game of the tournament, Cameron gave up multiple runs in the first four innings, including nine in the fourth in a 17-3 loss to Riesel. The Lady Indians only had eight hits in the 5 innings played, but also took advantage of six Lady Yoe errors in the process to balloon the score. Cameron scored one run in the second and two runs in the third. Kenzie Wimmer and Karla Martinez each had an RBI. Molly Oges and Alexis Vargas had the two hits for Cameron.

White Oak (W 6-4)

The Lady Yoe rebounded in a big way in game two with a 6-4 win over White Oak. The Lady Necks finished 2016 with a 23-6-1 record and third round playoff appearance. Cameron scored lone runs in the first three frames before scoring two in the second to go up 5-1. Wimmer had one of her top games with the bat, going 3-3 with a triple, home run and three runs driven in. Leadoff hitter Daniella Hill also had a multi-hit game with two singles. Starting pitcher Madison Brunson tossed all seven innings, giving up 7 hits, 2 earned runs and only allowed 1 walk.

Fairfield (W 5-3)

Cameron ran the win streak to two games after breaking a 3-3 tie in the fifth with the go-ahead and eventual winning runs over Fairfield. After committing five or more errors in the previous two games, the tides turned as the Lady Eagles had five miscues while Cameron only had one. Alexis Vargas led Cameron from the plate, going 2-3 with two base on balls. Ashlee Balch, Ny’eli Vargas and Bruson each drove in a run. Brunson also picked up her second win of the tournament, pitching 6 innings, giving up 4 hits and just 1 earned run.

Milano (L 14-6)

To complete play, Cameron fell to Milam County counterpart Milano for the second time this season. The Lady Eagles, which are currently ranked 20th in the state in class 2A, scored 7 runs in the first and third innings to take a commanding 14-0 lead before Cameron made the game respectable in the final three innings. Hill and Vargas both had two hits in the contest. Milano’s Laynie Bastow, Naomi Graham and Kristian Taylor all had two RBIs apiece. Brunson gave up 14 runs, but only one was earned. Jenna Lewis, another sophomore for the Lady Eagles, picked up the win, striking out 11.
