8-run 4th propels Lexington over Lady Yoe

For the first three innings of last Wednesday’s spring break contest with Lexington, we had a game that could have went either way. That was before the Lady Eagles broke things wide open in the fourth inning with eight runs in a 11-0 victory over the Lady Yoe.

Cameron saw their biggest momentum swing in the bottom of the first when starting pitcher Madison Brunson caught a line drive right back at her. The freshmen alertly doubled off the runner at second base.

The only earned runs against Brunson came via the long ball, as Kylie Hobbs hit one out in the first, followed by a Kacie Johnson home run in the third to extend the lead up to 3-0.

However, in that same third, Brunson suffered a hand injury and was forced to leave the circle.

“She pitched pretty well and then she got hit in the hand and she got hurt and we had to take her out and that made it tough for us,” said Lady Yoe head coach Abe Vargas.

Lexington proceeded to send 12 batters to the plate in the 8-run fourth.

“Lexington is a better team than they were last year and are much improved,” said Vargas of Lexington’s 5-0 start in 20-3A. “Also with us being young and missing quite a few players, it has an effect on us.”

At this point, Cameron (1-4) is only starting one senior and has just three juniors to make a majority of the lineup sophomores and freshmen. Two of those starters were out for Wednesday’s game.

Brunson’s final pitching totals included 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 strikeout and 1 base on balls.

Cameron had just one lone hit, with Kenzie Wimmer singling to lead off the top of the fourth. Hobbs, who also started in the circle for Lexington, stuck out 11 batters and only walked two in here five innings of work.

On Tuesday, Cameron held tough with Rogers before faltering in the latter innings in a 7-2 loss.  

“It was close at 2-1 and we had got the big hit with Kenzie,” said Vargas “We are just trying to string together more hits when we need them and that is the key. That is what they did and we weren’t able to do that. Our defense played pretty well and that helped us stay in the game.”

Wimmer drove in and scored the lone run for the Lady Yoe in the 4th inning with a home run to cut the Rogers lead in half. Cameron could draw no closer as Rogers added insurance runs down the stretch to secure the home win.

The loss drops Cameron to 1-5 while Rogers improves to 5-1. The ladies will host Rockdale on Friday and Academy on Tuesday.
