Larry Joe Spivey passed away on Saturday March 25, 2017, at the Hospice Unit Veterans Hospital in Temple.
He was born in Rosebud on Sept. 19, 1949. He graduated from Rosebud High School in 1968 where he was a standout running back for the Rosebud Black Panther Football team.
He served in the United States Army Reserves and then in the Active duty Army from 1971 to 1975. He was Honorably Discharged from both the Reserves and the Army.
Larry had a Masters Degree in outdoor sculpture. His art work is seen all over Central Texas. His murals are on several buildings in downtown Cameron. He always placed a member of this family into the paintings. His father is in the “12 Horsemen.” He is in the center of the line. His mother is the little girl sitting on top of the bale of cotton in the mural of the “family going to town.” One of his proudest accomplishments is the large eagle steel sculpture in downtown Rosebud.
Larry lived all over the U.S. He loved to travel. He had his trip of a lifetime when he went to Europe to climb the Austrian Alps. He lived in New York, California, Delaware, Philadelphia and St. Louis before moving back to Texas to care for his “Momma.” They became best friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Spivey; his mother, Florence Kemp Spivey; his niece, Cary Melissa Spivey in 1972; his niece, Brenda Lee Barrett in 2012; and his brother-in-law, Billy Ray Barrett in February 2017.
He is survived by the “Light of his life” his 10–year-old daughter, Laurel Paige Spivey; his sister, Peggy Ann Spivey; brothers, Marvin Wayne Spivey and wife Nancy and Ronnie Lee Spivey and wife Dana; nieces and nephews, Billy Ray Barrett II, Deborah Kay Barrett Bagley, Jason Alan Spivey and Zachary Neil Spivey. He leaves eight great-nieces and great-nephews. His mother-in-law, Diane Jamison, also survives.
Larry's Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Little River Baptist Church on County Road 979 outside Cameron.
