Yoe golf advances to state tournament
It’s not about how you start, but how you finish. It was not as if the Yoemen played poorly in their first round of regional play from Brenham on Monday. The Yoemen shot a 366 collectively after one round of play, and sat in fifth place overall, behind Rockdale (337), Frankston (358), Buffalo (361), and Pollok Central (364). The top three teams advance on to the state tournament in May, and the Yoemen were only five shots back heading into day two.
On day two, Cameron not only played well enough to reach that plateau, but they managed to jump all the way up to the number two spot, shooting a 351 - a 15 stroke improvement. The 351 was five strokes better than Rockdale’s second round 356. The Tigers shot a 337 in their first round. The is the first time in school history that the boys golf team has advanced to the state tournament.
The final team standings (top ten): 1. Rockdale (693), 2. Cameron Yoe (717), 3. Pollok Central (725), 4. Buffalo (734), 5. Frankston (737), 6. West (748), 7. Whitney (758), 8. Altair Rice (764), 9. Maypearl (780), 10. Maypearl (780).
Cameron’s Nikolas Keratsopoulos won the silver medal with a 74 and 78 for a total of 152 over his two rounds of golf. That total was just seven strokes behind the leader, Preston McGinty (145) of Bruceville-Eddy. Other Yoe golfers included Kobe Young (94, 95), Luke Green (95, 93), Stockton Kruse (104, 89), and Andrew Ortiz (103, 115).
The Yoemen, along with Rockdale and Pollok Central, will represent region III at the UIL State Tournament at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin on May 22 and 23. The Lady Yoe will be competing at the regional tournament on Wednesday and Thursday with a trip to state on the line. We will have full reaction from both squads in next week’s edition of sports.
