Moorer advances to state meet

The Texas state track and field meet will be held from May 11 to May 13 in Austin.  If you are planning on attending, you will have a chance to watch a Yoe High athlete compete for a state championship. 

Brittney Moorer added to her impressive streak of performances by winning the shot put in this past week's 3A region III meet from Baylor University.  Moorer, which has already captured a district championship and area championship, continues to pile up the awards. 

Moorer was pleased with her performance, but feels she is capable of more when she throws in Austin later this month. 

"I feel that I could have done better," said Moorer, who's longest throw ended up at 37"11.25'.  "I'm always pushing myself to go a little bit farther. I was really hoping to reach my goal of hitting 40 feet last week, but that did not happen due me stepping out of the ring and scratching. Besides that I felt pretty good about it, I mean I got first in regionals and I get to go to state. I'm just looking forward to working hard at state."

Her coach, Wanda White, noted that it was a process for the junior to get to this point.  "Brittney was focused this week during the competition, she put together the things we worked on in practice well.  A lot of people do not know but she suffered a shoulder injury that kept her from having a full season,  but she worked through it and came back to good form. Her second throw was the 37'11 1/4 throw clinching the regional title. She looked more comfortable than she did the remainder."

Moorer's clinching throw was over five feet longer than last year's mark of 32'2" in the same competition.  Moorer edged out district counterpart Taylor Strmiska (37'11") of Academy by a quarter of an inch. 

Cameron had members compete in 11 other events over the two-day meet.  Lady Yoe junior Za'kara Bryson just missed out on a trip to state, finishing in third place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.43.  Tyrisha Hightower (12.15) of Coldspring and Zharia Mercer (12.34) or Rockdale finished in first and second.  

Other Lady Yoe competitors in the finals included Destiny Anderson, Ashlee Balch, Ashantia Brooks and Za'kara Bryson (8th, 50.99) in the 4x100 relay, and the same group in the 4x200 (8th, 1:51.66) relay.

For the Yoemen, KeAndrew Moore (11.49) was 15th in the 100 meter dash, Noah Kostroun (52.81) was 14th in the 400 meter run, the team of Kobe McKinney, Patrick England, Levi May and DJ Daniels (43.91) were 14th in the 4x100 relay, Koustroun (19-3.75) was 15th in the long jump and Jordan Wells (39-10.75) was 12th in the triple jump.  Davion Bynaum could not run in the meet due to injury.  

The Lady Yoe finished in 13th overall as a team with 16 points recorded.  Altair Rice won the meet with 84 points.

The Yoemen did not officially record a point.  McGregor won the meet with a 20-point advantage over Crockett (72 to 52). Defending state champion Rockdale was fifth with 32 points.   Tiger track star Jaquayln Crawford was first in the prelims for the 100 meter dash on Friday, but pulled up with an injury at the finish line of the 4x100 finals and did not return for further action.  The 4x100 team finished in third place behind Crockett (41.58) and McGregor (42.48).
