Moorer finishes 6th in the state

The remarkable run for Yoe High's Brittney Moorer in the shot put ended on Friday at the final event of the season - the state track meet.  

Moorer, which had district, area and regional titles under her belt, finished in sixth place at state with a throw of 37-3.75.  

"I preformed to the best of my abilities," said Moorer.  "I was nervous, being as it was my first year at state but I didn't let that stop me. I pushed hard and never gave up."

Shot put coach Wanda White felt things went well for the junior.  

"She handled the "big stage" like a pro," said White.  "Having said that, state throwers get six throws providing they get one in sector to get the rest.  She was a bit tight and I feel like by the time we started finals she was in a better frame of mind to go after the 5th-4th spots."

The complete standings for the shot put: 1. Zada Swoopes, Whitewright (44-08); 2. Monica Driscoll, Clyde (41-8.25); 3. Lindsey Thorpe, Boyd (40-10.50); 4. Briana Medlock, Arp (39-9.50); 5. Jayla Hooper, West Rusk (39-5.00), 6. Brittney Moorer, Cameron Yoe (37-3.75); 7. Victoria Sunday, Poth (37-0.00); 8. Casey Tislow, Goliad (37-0.00); 9. Taylor Strmiksa, Academy (33-5.50).  

In terms of underclassmen placement, Moorer was second only to Hooper of West Rusk.  That means a state championship could be well within reach for 2018. 

"For my senior year I obviously want to make it back to state, and hopefully come out on top," said Moorer.  "Hard work and dedication will get me there."

White also noted that being able to compete on the biggest stage should only benefit Moorer heading into her senior season.  

"It's a great experience because this is the best in the state for 3A and that is what you want to do," said White.  "We discussed what it was going to take to get back next year and maybe bring a fellow teammate with her.  We already discussed her off season work out and the conditioning.  A coach can be happy when exiting the state meet and having your athlete asking what she needed to do for next year."

The 3A girls state title was awarded to Uplift Hamilton out of Dallas, with 76 points.  Crockett won the boys title with 41 points.  Moorer's 6th place finish recorded 1 point for Cameron.  Rockdale (3) and Franklin (2) also got on the board

Franklin, with 4 points, was the only boys team from 20-3A to record points.  Bremond's Joe Williams put on a show for the fans in Austin, capturing gold in the 2A 100 meter dash (10.61), 400 meter dash (47.50) and the 200 meter dash (21.48).  Williams was a receiver on Bremond's state championship football team.
