Yoemen scramble for another 7 on 7 SQT

After falling short of qualifying for the second consecutive week, Cameron is now having to scramble to find another spot in a state qualifying tournament. The Yoemen missed out on semifinal play in Gatesville this past week. Gatesville was the very tournament that Cameron qualified in during the 2016 season.

The Yoemen are now on the waitlist for Giddings and Brownwood, but are not currently guaranteed a spot in either tournament. Cameron has qualified for state in every year but one (2014) since 2009.

Franklin, Thorndale move on to regional semifinals

One of the state’s most improbable runs will continue for another week, as the Franklin Lions won their best of three game series over Grandview, two games to one. The series, which was played at The Yards of Cameron, went down to the wire.

The Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game one before holding on, 6-4. In game two, Franklin had a four-run lead late before giving it up in the seventh, forcing a winner-take-all game three. Franklin responded when it mattered the most, clinching the series with a 3-2 win.

The Lions now advance on to play the number one team in the state - Central Heights. That series is set to begin on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Madisonville.

The Thorndale Bulldogs, which ended the season ranked in the top five, took care of Evadale in two straight games to advance. The Bulldogs now draw Refugio, the number one team in 2A, in the fourth round. That series will begin on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Weimar. Game two is set for 4:00 p.m. on Friday with game three to follow if necessary.

Yoe Golf finishes 10th at state

On Monday and Tuesday, the Yoemen golf teams competed in their first ever state tournament. Cameron ended up finishing in 10th place overall out of 12 teams in the event.

Collectively, Cameron shot a 373 as a team on day one. Day one scores saw Nikolas Keratsopoulus, which was dealing with an illness, lead the way with an 81. Freshman Kobe Young was second with a 93, Stockdale Kruse had a 92, Luke Greene came with an 102, and Andrew Ortiz shot a 109.

Cameron finished the first round in ninth place overall, 58 strokes behind Troup (315), the leader.

The Yoemen shot 16 strokes better on day two (357) to finish with a total score of 730. Every other team also improved on their scores, including Blanco’s 30-stroke jump over Cameron into the eighth spot.

Keratsopoulos finished in 15th place overall with the 157 two-day total. Kase Middleton of Comanche was your overall individual winner with a 145.
