7 on 7 Rained Out

The Cameron Yoemen were scheduled to compete in their first round of 5A/6A league games on Monday at Copperas Cove, but mother nature said otherwise as the games were rained out. Those games will not be made up. Three weeks of the league still remain on the schedule.

Academy softball wins state

For the first time in school history, the Academy Lady Bees are softball state champions. Academy drew Hughes Springs (34-4) in the semifinals. The Lady Bees scored three runs in the top of the first inning, which was enough for starting pitcher Gaby Hay, who went the distance giving up two two runs to pick up the win, 3-2.

Santa Gertrudis Academy (SGA) defeated Brock in the other semifinal, 8-2, to set up the all-Academy final. Both teams traded two runs in the second inning before SGA pushed a lone run across in the 5th to go up 3-2. In the top of the 7th, Hay got it done with the bat, tripling to score two runs to give the Lady Bees the lead for good.

Hay finished the job in the bottom half of the 7th, setting down SGA 1-2-3. Hay was named MVP for her win on the mound and 3 RBI. The senior won 34 of Academy’s 37 games from the circle in 2017.

20-3A Softball All-District

With the conclusion of Academy’s state championship run, the 20-3A softball all-district list has been released. A total of four Lady Yoe athletes have been recognized. Cameron shortstop Daniella Hill, which will be continuing her softball career from MCC, earned 1st team all-district honors. McKenzie Wimmer and Karla Martinez both earned 2nd team honors while Marquazia Workman was an honorable mention pick. Gaby Hay, which was recently named the state tournament MVP, was also named the district MVP.

Thorndale falls to Big Sandy for the second straight year

The impressive run by the Thorndale Bulldogs through the 2A region IV bracket came to end this past weekend in the regional finals. Thorndale fell to Big Sandy in back-to-back games (3-2 and 5-1) to end the season at 25-5. Big Sandy was the same team to take down Thorndale in the regional quarterfinal round of the 2016 playoffs.

Locals at state baseball tournament

The state’s best baseball teams will be meeting up in Round Rock and Austin this week to compete for a state championship. Things will get going on Wednesday with the 2A semifinals and play will run through Saturday afternoon with the 6A championship game. The 4A games will once again be a Disch-Faulk Field on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin while the others will be at the Dell Diamond.

Locally, a number of Central Texas based teams will have a shot at the title. In 1A, Abbott (27-3-1) will take on Gilmer Union Hill (9-13) in the semis on Friday at 9:00 a.m. at the Dell Diamond. In 3A, Georgetown Gateway Prep (23-2-1) draws Wall (30-3-1) out of region I at 7:00 p.m. Robinson (30-2) is back at the 4A state tournament after taking down China Spring. The Rockets get Sinton (30-5-2) at 1:00 p.m. in Austin. In 6A, Round Rock (31-7) will take on San Antonio Reagan (30-8) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
