A Cameron Junior High student is set to compete at the National Junior High Rodeo Finals in Tennessee June 18-25.
The Texas Junior High Rodeo State finals were held May 21-27 in Gonzales. Students from 10 rodeo regions across the state came and competed in 13 events. Each region sends the top 10 students in each event to the state finals so that most events have 100 competitors in them.
Cameron junior high had four students represent Cameron at the state finals.
Mason Vaculin, an incoming eighth-grader at Cameron Junior High, son of Jeremy and Melissa Vaculin, competed at state in boy’s breakaway, boy’s goat tying, team roping, and ribbon roping. Vaculin placed fifth in the first go round of goat tying and won a top six buckle for tying a 10.1 seconds. He also caught both breakaway calves with a 3.80 and a 2.62 allowing him to place fourth in the second round and win a top six buckle for the second round. He roped a 3.3 in the short round, which put him third in the average and securing him a spot to the National Junior High Rodeo Finals in Lebanon, Tenn. He will be competing against kids from all over the United States.
Brooklyn Balch, an incoming eighth-grader at CJH, daughter of Eric and Tammy Balch, competed at state in the pole bending, barrel racing, goat tying, breakaway and ribbon running. She made a super nice pole run in round one and placed 10th and tied a fast goat tie of a 9.2 seconds. Balch also made some other nice runs during the week.
Connor Barton, an incoming seventh-grader at CJH, son of Jason and Monica Barton, competed at state in boy’s goat tying and boys breakaway roping. Barton had a nice run in second go round in the breakaway with a time of 2.61 and placed third in the round and was awarded a top six buckle.
Jistol Walzel, an incoming ninth-grader at YHS, son of Joel and Mandi Walzel, competed at state in the tie-down roping and boy’s goat tying. Walzel made two really nice go round runs and qualified for the short round after tying a 13.3 and a 15.6 in the tie-down calf roping. He roped his third calf in the short round and tied a 15.3 putting him fifth in the average at the state finals and alternate to the National Junior High Finals.
