Yoemen wrap up play in 7-on-7 league

This Monday, Cameron traveled over to Temple for the final week of 7-on-7 league play. The month-long session of games came to an end with the Yoemen posting a 1-2 record. Cameron dropped the opener to Temple (31-13), defeated Copperas Cove (28-8) and fell to Belton (39-27) in the finale.

“I thought we came out slow in that first game,” said Yoe head coach Tommy Brashear. “We kind of have a habit of that. We have some older kids and we need to come out a little faster. We won the second one big and lost the first and last one. The defense finally got a stop in that third game and the offense sputtered twice two series in a row.”

Cameron finished with an overall record of 5-4 against the much larger 5A and 6A schools. That included a perfect 3-0 mark in week three when play took place in Cameron. However, wins are secondary when looking at the big picture.

“All-in-all it’s 7-on-7, and we are about getting better on our routes and our timing. That is the reason we do it. They have a whole lot better understanding of our offense and defense now, young and old, before we started this. That is what I love about this league.”

Much like the bigger schools on the non-district football schedule, Brashear believes this will only help his players down the road.

“It’s a lot like our preseason schedule,” said Brashear. “The plan is you get better from that. Good teams can show you what you need to work on. We could go and play in a smaller league and probably dominate with the kids that we have, but with this league you can’t dominate, and that’s what I love about it. You have to work hard.”

In the opening loss to host Temple, Cameron never got into a groove in a 31-13 loss. Down 7-0, Yoe quarterback Zack Andress found Ka’Zirrus Holt to tie the game up. Cameron later notted it again at 13 all with Andress connecting with KeAndrew Moore, but Temple scored the next three touchdown to put the game away.

In the 28-7 win over Copperas Cove, the Yoe defense led the way with six consecutive stops to begin the game. During that time, Andress connected with Moore on three occasions and Iverson Westbrook once to put the Yoemen up 28-0. DJ Daniels also had an interception during the defensive series of stops.

The Belton game was the most competitive of the three, but the Tigers put up two touchdowns late to break the tie and pull out a win. With the Yoemen down 27-20, Andress went back to Moore again. Holt caught the extra point attempt to tie up the game, but the Tigers responded and ended on a 19-0 run.
