Cameron league softball sends 3 to state

This past week, the girls in the Cameron little league competed in district tournaments all across Central Texas. The results were positive, as a total of three teams will be moving on to the state tournament later this month. The first team to clinch their spot at state was the 6U Cameron Lil’ Ladies, which won the six-team district tourney over the likes of Rosebud, Temple (2) and Gatesville (2). The 18-team state tournament will begin on Monday in Axtell (N. 9th St.). In the 8U coach pitch division, the Cameron Thunder (1st) and Cameron Dirt Diamonds (2nd) both advanced to state by picking up wins over a pair of Rockdale teams. The coach pitch state tournament will also begin Monday from Temple’s Wilson Park (1909 Curtis Elliott Drive). Times for the first round games will be decided on Sunday during the coaches meeting.

Cameron hires new baseball coach

It didn’t take long for Yoe High athletic director Tommy Brashear to find his next man to lead the baseball program. It was announced on Tuesday that Hector Delgadillo will take the reigns of Yoe baseball.

“We had some very good, high quality applicants for the baseball job,” said Brashear. “I was a little worried about that with it being so late in the summer. We interviewed four people for the job. I think all would have been very good choices, but we felt like Coach Delgadillo was a great fit for our program. He is very excited about joining Yoe Nation.”

Delgadillo has been the head baseball coach at San Antonio McCollum the past four years, where he led his team to 63 wins and a pair of district titles. There are also ties to Cameron.

“A have a good friend of mine who works their in Cameron - Coach Pete Magre,” said Delgadillo. “He gave me a call. He was my pitching coach in college. He asked if I would be interested. It was something I always talked about being able to coach at a smaller school to experience that small town community and get a feel for what it’s all about. Hopefully we can contribute to the success.”

Delgadillo is from San Antonio and played his college ball at Incarnate Word. He was drafted by Toronto in the 36th round of the 2005 draft, and after a stint in the minors he returned to Incarnate Word to complete his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Delgadillo was a graduate assistant for the baseball program during that time. In his three years at McCollum, his teams made the playoffs twice and won two district championships.

The next chapter of his life now lands him in Cameron. When asked about his coaching style, his message was simple but direct.

“I’m a competitor,” said Delgadillo. “That is what I want my kids to understand. Two bigs things I have always talked about are attitude and effort. If you can bring that with you every day, whether it’s practice, in a game, or in life, I think that goes a long way.”

UMHB ranked #1 in preseason poll

After capturing the school’s first ever national championship in 2016, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will have the target squarely placed on their backs this upcoming season. Just this past week, D3Football.com ranked the Crusaders as the preseason number one team in the nation. UMHB collected 16 of the 25 first place votes.

The Cru captured the 2016 national title by defeating Wisconsin-Oshkosh 10-7 in the Stagg Bowl. Rounding out the top five are usual suspects Mount Union (2), UW-Whitewater (3), UW-Oshkosh (4) and St. Thomas (5). Conference foe Hardin-Simmons comes in ranked at number 12.

Former Yoe running-back Traion Smith is on the UMHB roster and could see playing time after sitting out last season while recovery from knee surgery.

Cheer Camp
The 2017 summer cheer camp will take place on July 22 from the Yoe High Gym. The camp will be from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and will be for children aged four all the way up to fifth
grade. Lunch will be provided, but all campers should bring a water bottle with their name on it. All early registered campers will receive a t-shirt. Additionally, all campers will get to cheer at a pep rally and football game. Make checks payable to Yoe High Cheerleaders.

Volleyball Camp
The Lady Yoe volleyball camp will take place from July 26 up until July 28. The camp will be at the Yoe High Gym and is for all incoming fifth through eighth graders and ninth through twelfth graders. The younger group will go from 8:30-11:30 while the older girls will work from 1:30-4:30. The cost is $50 per camper.

Football Camp
The Yoemen football camp will get underway on July 31 and will run through August 3 from the Lester and Beatrice Williams Strength and Conditioning Center and Yoe Field. The two age groups include incoming third through sixth and seventh through ninth graders. The youngsters will go from 8-10 while the older group will hit the field from 10:30 to 12:30. The cost per camper is $45. Campers will need to bring their own shorts, t-shirt, cleats and a towel. You can register the day of the camp. Please make all checks payable to Yoe Football Camp.
