Yoemen #1 in TheOldCoach poll

Just about about month after the Yoemen were named the preseason number one team in the state by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, another publication has followed suit. TheOldCoach.com’s Friday Night Football magazine (FNF) was recently released and also has Cameron as the number one team in 3A division one.

The magazine mentioned that “with 15 starters back from a regional finalist squad, expect such success to continue” for Cameron. Quarterback Zack Andress and Iverson Westbrook were mentioned as playmakers on the offense, while Levi May and Garrett Roeder were two returners mentioned on defense.

The full top 25 rankings: 1. Cameron Yoe, 2. Yokaum, 3. Rockdale, 4. Jefferson, 5. Brock, 6. La Marque, 7. Wall, 8. Hallettsville, 9. Pottsboro, 10. Teague, 11. Mineola, 12. Sunnyvale, 13. Comanche, 14. Littlefield, 15. Goliad, 16. Farmersville, 17. Lyford, 18. Malakoff, 19. White Oak, 20. Luling, 21. Grandview, 22. Shallowater, 23. Franklin, 24. Woodville, 25. Van Alstyne.

The preseason all-state team also had Andress listed. The senior was the only quarterback in 3A (division I and division II) to make the list. Rockdale’s Jaquayln Crawford (WR) and Dylan David (LB), and Franklin’s Casey Phillips (OL) were also honored as selections from 10-3A.

10-3A Division I

As the number one team, Cameron is pegged to win the 10-3A district title in 2017. Rockdale is expected to finish second with Franklin coming in at third. Those rankings fall perfectly in line with what DCTF had projected. The difference in opinion comes in the fourth and final playoff spot. TheOldCoach has Troy finishing fourth while DCTF has McGregor in that spot. The Bulldogs are predicted to finish sixth behind Academy in the FNF magazine.

Cameron’s Non-District Opponents

A total of three of the Yoemen’s four non-district opponents are ranked in class 4A. China Spring, which is projected as the second place team out of 13-4A DI, comes in at number four in the state. The La Vega Pirates sit at number two. Bay City is also included in the division I rankings at number 17. In division II, Bellville is just out of the top 10 at number 11.

State Championship Predictions

Who could Cameron potentially play in the state game? That is where the two publications differ slightly. DCTF has the Yoemen matching up with Brock out of region I in the title game. TheOldCoach has a region II representative - Jefferson - reaching the title game to play the Yoemen. Mineola, which won the 2016 state championship over Yoakum, represented region II.
