Cameron City Council proposed a $0.764 tax rate for the coming year during its meeting Aug. 21.

“We set our budget according to setting it just below the rollback rate,” City Manager J. Rhett Parker said. “That will bring in additional revenue of just under $10,000. It’s not much, but it is a little bit more general fund revenue.”

Parker said the budget will see general fund revenue of $1,408,012.78 with the proposed tax rate.

The average taxable value of a residence homestead in the city last year was $65,326. Based on last year’s tax rate of $0.759 per $100 of taxable value, the amount of taxes imposed last year on the average home was $495.82.

The average taxable value of a residence in the city this year is $70,672. If the governing body adopts the effective tax rate for this year of $0.7473 per $100 of taxable value, the amount of taxes imposed this year on the average home would be $528.13.

If the governing body adopts the proposed tax rate of $0.764 per $100 of taxable value, the amount of taxes imposed this year on the average home would be $539.93.

The first public hearing on the tax rate will be Sept. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at Cameron City Hall. The second public hearing will be held on Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Cameron City Hall.

In other business the council also approved a request from Milam Community Theater to use the City Park for a Summer Children’s Camp production on June 15-16, 2018; rescheduled the Sept. 4 meeting to Sept. 5 due to the Labor Day holiday; and held a budget workshop.
