Cameron steamrolls Jarrell to pick up first 10-3A win

Sometimes losing can be contagious.  That is unfortunately what had been plaguing the Cameron Yoemen the last five weeks.  After easily defeating Bellville in their season opener, Cameron had dropped five straight, including back-to-back district contests to McGregor and Franklin to begin 10-3A play at 0-2.  

There would be no better time to break the school’s longest losing streak since 2003 than on Friday night at Jarrell.  The Cougars entered the contest winless at 0-6 and had scored only 35 points all year.  At the end of the night, that total remained the same as the Yoemen dominated in all phases of a 55-0 shutout victory.  

“This was needed in so many ways,” Yoe coach Tommy Brashear said.  “I felt like our kids had fun again tonight and that might be the most important thing.  I loved late in the game when Bynaum scored that touchdown and the kids were all down there celebrating with him and having fun. That is big.”

Davion Bynaum put the final touches on the win with a 67 yard run up the middle to close out the scoring.  Bynaum, which had just been called up from the JV, showed off the track speed that won him the district title last season.  

“It felt great to do that coming up from the JV to the varsity level,” said Bynaum.  “To do the same thing I was doing on JV felt great.”

The game was well in hand by that point as Cameron (2-4, 1-2) scored on six different occasions in the first half to put the game away early.  

The offense was set up with many short fields throughout the night but produced 432 total yards.  An even more important stat was that the Yoemen turned the ball over once, compared to the team’s average of three during the rough stretch of loses.  

“We had one turnover tonight which was a big deal,” said Yoe quarterback Zack Andress.  “We were just executing and receivers were running sharp routes even when they are not getting the ball.  The line did great and got great push in the run game.”

Andress was responsible for five touchdowns on the night, with all of the scores coming through the air.  Explosive passes were completed to Garrett Roeder (35 yards) and Iverson Westbrook (57 yards) in the first, Ki’Zirrius Holt (42 yards) in the second, and Kobe Young (34 yards) in the third quarter.

Whenever drives stalled, kicker Adrian Lewis made sure points went up on the board.  The senior connected on 33-yard and 27-yard field goals, and made all seven extra points attempts.  

“Every time we put points on the scoreboard, it's extra momentum throughout the game,” said Lewis.  “Everybody did their part and we were able to get them all in tonight.”

Brashear added: “The defense produced the shutout, the offense executed well most of the night, and special teams did a great job.  Adrian Lewis did a fabulous job kicking tonight and he is very capable of doing that every night.”

Jarrell had one major threat on the night, driving all the way to the Yoe one before the defense held to turnover the ball on downs end the end of the first.  

On the first play for Jarrell to open the second half, defensive lineman Brodie Sexton came out of a pile of players with the ball at the 33.  

“He came running up and I went for the ball,” said Sexton on the lone forced turnover.  “The ball just came right out and I came up with it and started running.”

Cameron did suffer one injury as defensive back Dondrick Moore had to be carted off with what appeared to be a hip injury.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Dondrick,” said Brashear.  “It is a hip type injury.  They are going to do some x-rays to make sure he is okay and see if it is anything bad or not.”

The shutout was the first since this very game a year ago when Cameron walked away with a 46-0 win.  The key now will be to carry over all the positives into next week’s huge showdown with rival Rockdale.

“It's great momentum going into the bell week,” said Brashear.  “I told the kids enjoy this one tonight and tomorrow let's get up there and watch our film and get ready for Rockdale.”
