Two Bulldogs advance to State Cross Country meet

Thorndale cross country runners Jacob Williamson and Mason Drumm advanced to the state meet after placing high enough in the Class 2A boys Region IV cross country title on Monday in Corpus Christi.  The UIL State Cross Country Championships are scheduled for Nov. 4 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

Williamson, who also qualified last year, finished 17th overall in a time of 18:46, with Drumm right behind him at 18th in a time of 18:56.

Milano’s Parker Jones won the 5,000 meter, Class 2A boys’ race in a time of 16 minutes and 40 minutes.  Duncan Naylor of Great Hearts Monte Vista was second in 16:57.

In 2016, Williamson was just the second boy in Thorndale school history to advance to the state cross country meet.  The other was Keon Mays in 2012.

The top four teams advance to the state meet and top 10 individuals not on those top four teams move on as well.

Great Hearts Monte Vista won the Class 2A Region IV boys team title with 44 points, with Brackettville Brackett placing second with 82 points.  Port Aransas was third with 102 points; Harper was fourth with 118 and Premont fifth with 193.

The Bulldogs finished sixth overall as a team with 221 points.

Other Bulldog runners competing in the regional race that saw 153 competitors were: Evan Ivy, 64th, 20:27; Jesus Hernandez 79th, 21:06; Logan O’Campo, 98th, 21:47; Kolby Neumeyer, 113th, 22:39; and Scott Widner, 116th, 22:50.

The Thorndale Lady Dogs finished sixth in the team results as well with San Saba winning the team title on 56 points, just ahead of Mason with 57.  Harper was third with 88 points and Port Aransas fourth with 154 points.  Shiner was fifth with 168 points.

Brighton Adams of San Saba was the individual race winner in a time of 12:19 among the 156 runners competing.

Top finishers for the Lady Dogs were Kylie Buchanan with a 28th place and a time of 13:46 in the two-mile race. Ashton Kiesling was 33rd overall in 13:46.  After the advancing teams were determined and those runners not on those squads were left, Buchanan as 12th and Kiesling was 17th.  The top 10 of those runners advance to state.

Other Lady Dogs competing at the regional meet were: Ava Vicknair, 45th, 14:22; Landry Laywell, 54th, 14:46; Allison Betak, 55th, 14:52; and Devin Dickerson, 99th, 16:25.

Thorndale cross country Coach Bradley Dickerson said Thorndale runners “ran really hard and represented us well.”
