Yoemen cold against Franklin; rebound big at Lexington

As of late, the Yoe basketball team has been involved in some dramatic 20-3A ball games.  The Yoemen fell to number one ranked Jarrell at home by just six, and managed to hold off Hearne on the road in overtime to maintain their second place standing in the district. 

The positive momentum did not carry over into Friday’s home contest with Franklin, as the Yoemen managed just 20 points through three quarters and fell hard in the end, 53-36.  

It was a frustrating game all around, and Yoe coach Nick Burns reiterated that feeling following the loss.  

“Shots were not falling,” Burns said. “We didn’t grab rebounds and everything was going their way.  We just did not play very good.”

It was evident from the opening tip that things were tilting in favor of the team in green, as the Lions began the game 3-4 shooting and had the 7-0 lead with just over two minutes off the clock. Cameron only had six total points in the opening quarter and trailed 16-6.  

Yoe sophomore guard Kobe Young did not score in the opening period, but did provide his team with some mini bursts in the second with two buckets. Young also hit a pair of three-pointers in the fourth to cut the lead down from 45-20 to 45-26 in a span of just a minute, but it was far too late to begin a comeback. 

“We have to play,” Burns said.  “We can’t take anyone for granted.  We have Lexington and Rogers next week and they are pretty dang good.  If we play like that then anyone can beat us.”

Lexington

Coming off what was easily their most disappointing district performance of the year, Cameron needed to make sure they turned momentum around quickly on the road at Lexington.  Entering the game, Cameron still sat at 6-3 in the standings, but that was also where Hearne and Franklin were positioned, creating the three-way tie for the second spot. 

Cameron totally dominated Lexington in their first matchup, going up by nearly 20 after the first quarter. This go around, it was a bit tougher, but Cameron managed to use a big 12-point swing in the fourth period to pull away for a 62-44 win.  

After not having a senior in the top three of scoring in the loss to Franklin, both Keanu McCarter and Levi May came in with 13 points a apiece to lead the charge.  

Nico Vargas came in with eight, Calvin Stewart had seven, Kobe Young managed five and Dondrick Moore, Royce Reynolds, Thomas Melton and Dre Booze each had four.  

Tuesday’s District Results:

Franklin 53, Cameron Yoe 36; Jarrell 61, Academy 51; Hearne 63, Rockdale 38; Rogers 63, Lexington 38.  

Friday’s District Results

Cameron Yoe 62, Lexington 44; Franklin 66, Rockdale 52; Jarrell 46, Rogers 33; Academy 60, Hearne 52.

Up Next

Cameron (7-3) will travel to Rogers (3-7) on Friday before returning home for the rival matchup with Rockdale (3-7) on Tuesday.
