Lady Yoe rallies late to pick up win in Jourdanton

For the most part, it was a struggle for the Lady Yoe in their two days of play in the Jourdanton tournament this past weekend. Cameron dropped their first three games and was trailing 5-1 to Gonzales in their finale. It was not a total loss as the Lady Yoe managed to score 4 in the 4th and 3 in the fifth to avoid going winless.

Game Summaries

Natalia (L 8-3)

Cameron began the tournament with what was the eventual champion in Natalia. The Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but Cameron responded in the bottom half as T’Maja Oges doubled on a ground ball to third, scoring Madison Brunson who had reached on an error, and Brittany Hatter, which had just singled in the previous at-bat.

In the third, Hatter grounded out to third, pushing across Kenzie Wimmer to give the ladies their first lead.

It was short-lived as Natalia tied it in the top of the fourth and scored 5 more in the fifth before the time limit caused the game to end there.

Devine (L 8-0)

Much like in the loss to Natalia, it was one bad inning that costs Cameron in the loss to Devine. The two teams were tied 0-0 through three innings before Devine exploded for 8 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull away.

Yoe starting pitcher Madison Brunson cruised through the first three innings, giving up just only one hit. But, a triple followed by a homerun and a few errors in the fourth saw things go in the opposite direction.

Jourdanton (L 12-0)

To wrap up day one, Cameron was simply overwhelmed by host Jourdanton, 12-0 in three innings of play. The ladies were simply taken out of the game early with 6 runs in the first, 4 in the second and 2 more in the third.

One positive for starter Alejandra Ibarra was that only 6 of those runs were earned as 5 errors led to costly insurance runs to go up on the board.

Gonzales (W 8-5)

The Lady Yoe simply made sure they were not going home winless, rallying from 5-1 deficit to shock Gonzales, 8-5.

Everything got started in the bottom of the fourth when Contreras homered to center to turn

momentum around. Trinity Daniel, Oges and Ty’Esha Miller all singled to move the game to 5-3. Ibarra grounded out to third to bring in a run followed by a Hatter double to center to tie the game up at 5.

After quicking retiring Gonzales in the top of the fifth, Oges completed the comeback with a walk-off 3-run homer to center.

Oges was 2-3 from the 6-hole with the game-winning homer, 2 runs and 3 RBI. Contreras was also 2-3 with 2 runs driven in. Leadoff hitter Hatter was 2-3 with an RBI. Ibarra picked up the win in relief, going 3 innings while giving up just 1 run on 1 hit.

Gatesville Tournament

Cameron is set to compete in the Gatesville tournament this Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the ladies will battle with host Gatesville (8:30), Temple (2:00) and Florence (5:30). The Lady Yoe will return Saturday for three more games with Reicher (8:30), Copperas Cove (2:00) and Groesbeck (7:00).

District opener postponed

Cameron’s district home-opener with Academy was pushed back twice. The ladies were scheduled to take on the defending state champs on Monday, but weather forced the game back to Tuesday and now to Wednesday. We will have a full report on that game and action from Gatesville in next week’s edition of sports.
