Former Yoe coordinator takes 6A job
On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Lupe Florez had accepted the head football coaching job at 6A Clear Brook. Clear Brooks is located in Friendswood, just southwest of Houston. Florez was hired in 2012 by Rick Rhoades to be the offensive coordinator. In his three years in charge of the offense, Cameron averaged over 41 points per game and won three consecutive state championships. Florez then left for Bay City in 2015, where he guided the Black Cats to an overall record of 18-15 and an area round playoff finish in 2017. Bay City was 0-10 the year before Florez had arrived. He previously coached at Mission, Rains, Castleberry, Carter Riverside, Coldspring and in Brookings, Oregon.
All girls powerlifters qualify for regionals
It’s not about quantity but quality. That is the fortunate situation for powerlifting coach Eric Balch as he now has all four of his girl powerlifters advancing to the regional competition on March 3 from West High School.
The four advancing members are Selene Vargas, Faith Kistler, Yareli Contreras and Dajanay Bell. The quartet has routinely been in the top 5 of all the meets this season.
“Every girl that participated in Powerlifting this year made it to Regional Competition
I am very proud of them,” said Balch.

Lady Yoe golf places 5th in Brenham
Despite the larger competition, the Lady Yoe were still in the mix for a medal with a 5th place finish in Brenham on Monday. Cameron finished with a 406, but was only five shots back of second place Rockdale, which sat at 401. Bellville and Tompkins tied for third at 405. Host Brenham won the tourney with a 398.
Individually, Cameron had more to be pleased with as two girls placed inside the top 5 - something no other team in the tournament accomplished.
Keagan Galvan was fourth with an 89 while Jazmin Vaculin tied for fifth with a 93. Carley Tucker was 24th at 111, Emily Graham was 28th at 113 and Presley Perry came in 36th with a 119.
Marlin girls advance to state, Jarrell boys survive
After pulling off a shocking upset of Academy in the regional quarterfinal round, the Marlin Lady Dogs carried that momentum over to the regional tournament, where they scorched Hitchcock (69-46) before getting by Grandview (59-54) in the regional finals. Marlin will be taking on Brock in the state semifinals.
For the boys, Jarrell kept their hopes alive to get back to state after narrowly getting by Teague on Tuesday in overtime, 81-76. The Cougars now advance to the regional tournament and will match up with East Chambers. The other semifinal game is between Kountze and Grandview.
The number one Thorndale boys continue their tear throughout the playoffs, defeating Snook on Tuesday, 58-46. The Bulldogs will meet #14 Port Aransas at the regional tournament.

Both soccer teams clip Florence
After suffering tough home loses to Jarrell on Friday, both the Yoemen and Lady Yoe needed to pick up wins over Florence on Tuesday.
The boys accomplished that goal as Henry Martinez scored the lone goal of the night in a 1-0 win over the Buffaloes. The win improves Cameron to 2-4 in 25-3A and keeps the playoffs in sight.
The Lady Yoe had an equally thrilling win, getting by Florence for the second time this season, 2-1. Shelby Lara had the lone goal for Cameron, but a Darci Denio corner kick led to an own goal for Florence. The win improves Cameron to 3-4 and keeps them on track to earn the program’s first playoff berth.
