Yoe picks up first 20-3A win
Service Directory
Spring break was not kind to the Yoemen, which went 0-2, including a loss to Lexington on Thursday, 10-5.
Cameron’s offense had 11 hits but left the bases loaded on three occasions. The defense was there with no errors, but Lexington pounded out 14 hits and scored in the first five innings to create a 10-3 lead which was too much to overcome.
Lexington’s top of the order did most of the damage in the contest, and they got the scoring going in the first as a Meuth double, Justice single and Hess single plated one run to give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.
Collectively, the top four in the Lexington lineup totalled 10 of the 14 hits.
Down 4-0 in the 2nd, Bryce Brashear got the Yoemen on the scoreboard by lining a single to the pitcher Hess, scoring Anthony Layne from third base.
Jason Llanas and Alex Alonso picked up RBIs in the fourth cut the deficit to 8-3. Alonso and Layne each drove in runs in the 6th to cut it back down to five at 10-5, but that was the final scoring.
Thursday/Friday Scores: Lexington 10, Cameron Yoe 5; Franklin 8, Rockdale 6; Jarrell 11, Rogers 4.
Llanas, Layne come up big for Yoe in 1-0 win over Rogers
Both Cameron and Rogers came into Tuesday’s district 20-3A contest in very unfamiliar territory. Both teams generally are in contention for district championships, but on this night, each was looking for their first district win after three games.
Yoe ace Jason Llanas made sure his team was not losing four in a row, going the entire seven innings, giving up just two hits, zero runs, walked zero and struck out nine Eagle batters in a 1-0 shutout win.
“I went up there just trying to throw strikes and get ground balls for my team,” said Llanas, who helped his team improve to 1-3 in district play.
Rogers’ Trevor Glaser was the only batter to put a chink in the armour of Llanas, going 2-3, which included a leadoff double to begin the top of the seventh inning. That did not faze Llanas, which proceeded to strike out the next two batters before getting a ground out to end the game.
“I knew they were 0-3, but they were going to have their guy and we were going to have our guy,” said Yoe coach Hector Delgadillo on the pitching dual. “I didn’t even realize it was the 6th inning until we scored. It was a great job by both pitchers on the mound. Llanas was on fire.”
Glaser pitched six innings, gave up just four hits, one run, walked three and struck out six.
The game was scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, when Bryce Brashear singled to right to begin the frame. Llanas sacrificed him over to second before Andress flew out to right for two outs.
With Nick Alonso up to the plate with a 2-0 count, the decision was to put him on to get to five-hole hitter Anthony Layne.
Layne jumped on a 0-1 fastball, driving it to center to easily score Brashear.
“When they had two balls on Alex and they put him on, I knew it was up to me,” said Layne. “He threw the first one down the middle and I looked at it, so I knew I had to hit the second one. I knew if I could put it in play that Bryce was going to score from second.”
The dramatic win now looks to spark some positive momentum and potentially a winning streak starting this Friday in Rockdale.
“We are 1-3 now and we need to go to Rockdale and make it 2-3,” said Layne. “Everybody just needs a little encouragement and we need to pick each other up,” added Llanas.
