Funfest and BBQ Shootout gets approval, set for May 4-6

The Annual Cameron Funfest and BBQ Shootout will return to Ledbetter Park on May 4-6.

The Cameron City Council approved the use of the park for event organizers Working for Cameron during its meeting on April 2.

Julie Sulak with Working for Cameron said the event will once again feature the BBQ Shootout and popular events like Kid Fish, and the 5K Brat Trot Fun Run. She said this year they are partnering with the Cameron Chamber of Commerce for the arts and crafts part of the event and that 75 cookers have already registered for the cook-off.

The council also approved a request for Cameron Police Chief Lonnie Gosch to designate the Cameron Police Department as a “Safe Exchange Zone.”

Gosch said that in looking at what a few other communities have done he thinks this is a great idea to give residents a safe space for child exchanges and meeting up when an online purchase has been made to exchange purchases.

He said signs will be put up outside the department showing designation.

In other business the council also: approved the submission of a letter of intent to Texas A&M University to participate in the Texas Target Community Program to redo the city’s comprehensive plan; and heard the first reading of two ordinances.

The first ordinance will amend the provisions for tax abatements and reinvestment zones to include certain retail businesses. The second ordinance will regulate stopping, standing, parking and discharge or pick up of passengers on the streets in front of Cameron Junior High during certain times of the day. Both ordinances will have a second reading and be voted on during the council’s next meeting April 16.
