Yoe golf teams finish second in district, advance on to regionals

Another year, another shot at state.  That is what the Yoe and Lady Yoe golf teams have accomplished again in 2018 after both teams finished second in the 20-3A tournament from Temple on Friday. 

The Yoemen shot a 356 collectively in round two, which was nine strokes behind their opening round score of 347, shot a week before from Texas A&M.  

Nikolas Keratsopolous finished with a two-day total of 149 for the first medalist award.  The next closest golfer to Keratsopolous was Tim Handley of Jarrell, which finished with a 156. 

Kobe Young was Cameron’s second golfer, coming in with a  179 (89/90).  Stockton Kruse was third on the team with a 187 (96/91), while Luke Greene’s 188 (91/97) and Jale Walzel’s 221 (103/118) rounded out the scoring.   

Rockdale won the district with a score of 686.  Walker Crane (166), Brady Nelson (164), Ross Loth (166) and Gunner Miller (198) were the top four golfers for the Tigers.

Like most other teams, the Lady Yoe’s second round score from Temple suffered, finishing with at 438 - 42 strokes behind the opening round score of 396.  

Cameron was led by Keagan Galvan’s two-day total of 185 (83/102), which was good enough from the silver medal. Jazmin Vaculin also picked up the bronze with a 200 (96/104).  Emily Graham (221), Carley Tucker (230) and Presley Berry (239) also competed for the team.  

The Lady Yoe held a two-stroke lead over Rockdale after the opening round, but the Lady Tigers prevailed in the end with a 813.  Lyndy Laurrell won her third district championship with a 163 (83/80). Keven King had a 212 (102/110), Whitley Boyd came in with a 212 (104/108), Trinady Joslin had a 226 (109/117) and Gracey Burns had a 253 (120/133).

Both teams now advance to the regional tournament to be held at the Brenham Country Club.  The boys are scheduled to compete on April 23 and 24 while the girls will tee off on April 25 and 26.  

Milano track competes at district

Milano track and field athletes participated in the District 25-2A meet on April 4 in Thrall.

The Milano varsity boys were just three points away from winning the overall team title, scoring 155 points to Holland’s 158. The Milano varsity girls finished fourth in the team standings with 94 points.

Both the JV boys and girls were fifth overall in the final team standings with 18 points each.

The top four finishers in the varsity boys and girls contests advance on to the area meet on Monday, April 16, in Thrall.

Yoe boosters electing officers soon

As the 2018 sports season comes to a close over the next few months, the Yoe Athletic Boosters are looking to fill new roles in leadership.  On Monday, April 23, the boosters will be electing new officers from the field house at Yoe High at 6 p.m.  A meal will be provided for all of those in attendance.  

Soccer all-district awards

All of the teams from 25-4A have been eliminated from the playoffs, so all-district awards have been released.  Both the Yoemen and Lady Yoe are well-represented.  

The Lady Yoe had seniors Karla Martinez and Faith Kistler honored as first team selections.  Second team members include junior Katelyn Martinez and senior Houston Harris, while honorable mention selections are sophomore Rebecca Kostroun and junior Shelby Lara. 

Tiffany Bolivar, Houston Harris, Cailynne Hoelscher, Faith Kistler, Rebecca Kostroun, Karla Martinez, Katelyn Martinez, Brittney Moorer, Noemy Polanco-Ramirez and Marquazia Workman were mentioned on the academic all-district list. 

For the Yoemen, head coach Kamol Nohe has reported that seven different Yoemen have been honored.  First team selections were Enrique Paredes and Axel Martinez, second team selections include Diego Martinez and Chandler Barton, and honorable mentions nods were Manny Cardona, Ulices Cardona and Henry Martinez.  

Both teams made history by being the first in program history to make the playoffs.
