7 on 7 season begins today

The preparation for the start of the 2018 football begins today as the Yoemen host 7-on-7 league play from Yoe Field. Play will begin at 5:00 and each team in attendance will play three games. Teams participating in 2018 include Caldwell, Hearne and La Vega. Marlin and Thrall had competed in previous years. Cameron will host the league over the next three weeks while also starting competition in state qualifying tournaments. Cameron will be in their first tourney of the year next Saturday with the McClenan County SQT. The Yoemen will be competiting in pool play in Robinson. We will have a full preview of that tournament in next week’s edition of sports.  

 

Moore signs to run track

On Tuesday, Yoe track standout Dondrick Moore signed with Huston-Tillotson University in Austin. Moore joins fellow senior Za’Kara Bryson, which also singed with the Rams earlier this year. Moore finished off his 2018 capaign with a regional finish this past week at Midway.

 

Softball Playoffs

A number of area softball team are still in the hunt for a state title after the bi-district round of the playoffs. In 20-3A action, district champion Rogers easily coasted by West, 9-1 and 18-6. Academy had no problems with Groesbeck, 11-4, Whitney edged out Lexinton in three, 11-6, 0-4, 4-3, and Rockdale fell to Troy in a winner-take-all game, 6-0.

 

Rogers now meets up with Malakoff in the area round. That series will play place from West High School on Thursday (6:30), Friday (6:30) and Saturday (1:00), if necessary. Academy draws 17-3A champ Grandview. That series will be played at Waco ISD on Thursday (7:30), Friday (7:30) and Saturday (3:00), if necessary.

 

Baseball Playoffs

The baseball playoffs begin this week, and if you’re looking to catch a number of games, you don’t have to go far. The Yards of Cameron will be hosting a total of three different series, starting on Wednesday.

 

Things will start off on Wednesday when Taylor (23-6) and Giddings (13-11-1) square off in a one-game series at 7:00. West (17-9-2) and Jarrell (7-16) will start on Thursday at 7:30 and will play game two on Friday at 5:00, with game three to follow, if necessary.

 

On Saturday, Leander Glenn (8-14) and Navasota (18-6-1) will shift game two of their series to Cameron for a 4:00 pm start, with game three to follow, if necessary.

 

Elsewhere in 20-3A, Franklin (19-5-1) and Groesbeck (15-6-1) will play a three game series from Waco ISD. Game one is Thursday at 7:30, game two is Friday at 7:30 and an if necessary game three will be Saturday at 2:00. Lexington (13-10) and Troy (23-5) will meet at Georgetown Eastview on Thursday at 7:00, Friday at 5:00, with game three to follow, if necessary. Clifton (19-2-1) and Academy (14-8) also play at Waco ISD on Thursday at 7:30, Friday at 7:30 and Saturday, to be announced.

 

Physical set for Yoe athletes

Physicals for the next sport season have been announced. All incoming seventh through 12th graders can get their physical on May 8 from the fieldhouse at 4:00 pm. Cost is $15 per athlete.

 

Booster club scholarships available

Booster Club scholarship applications are available in the YHS counselor's office. They must be turned in by May 2. You must have participated in Athletics or Cheer all 4 years of high school to be eligible for the $125 scholarship that may applied for each year of college.

 

Cameron Yoe boys basketball camp

The basketball camp will be for boys entering third through ninth grade and will take place from June 5 through June 7. Times are set for 1:00-4:00 each day from the Yoe High Gym. The cost is 30 dollars per camper and checks need to be made payable to Lance Hause. Each camper pre-registed by May 26 will receive a camp t-shirt. Pre-registration forms can be turned in to Mrs. Beckhusen at Cameron Elementary and Coach Hause at Cameron Junior High. After May 26, you may register the first day of the camp.
