Tradition Protected: Lady Yoe golf advances to state

The Yoe athletic program has plenty to be proud of in its rich tradition of excellence. Right at the top of that group is Lady Yoe golf. There are very few programs and players that can say they get to compete for a state championship on a yearly basis, but that has now become the norm for the girls in maroon and grey. Last Wednesday and Thursday, the Lady Yoe joined the boys by punching their ticket to the state tournament by finishing in second place at regionals from Brenham.

Cameron finished with a two-day total of 787, and was 21 strokes ahead of third place Central Heights, which is also moving on. Rockdale cruised to the tournament championship with a 740.

Team totals: 1. Rockdale (740), 2. Cameron Yoe (787), 3. Central Heights (808), 4. Keene Smith (810), 5. Clifton (823), 6. McGregor (826), 7. East Bernard (827), 8. Teague (860), 9. Rio Vista (884), 10. East Chambers (920), 11. Buna (973), 12. Danbury (993), 12. Leon (993).

The Lady Yoe were in prime position after day one, posting a 396, good enough for the second position - a position they never relinquished.

Keagan Galvan led Cameron with an opening round 85, which was good enough for fourth place in the individual standings of 77 golfers.

Jazmin Vaculin came in with a 98, Carley Tucker sat at 100, Presley Perry was at 113, and Emily Graham shot a 115.

On day two, four of the five Lady Yoe Golfers shot a better round, and the team score was down five strokes at 391.

Galvan still led Cameron with a second-round 94 for a total of 179, good enough for sixth place overall. Vaculin trimmed three strokes off her first round score for 193 and 13th place. Tucker was at 197 for 15th, Presley Berry came in with a 218 and 31st place finish, and Graham shot a 222 for 35th.

Rockdale’s Lyndy Laurell was not going to be denied on either day, shooting the exact same 79, the low for any player in each round for the gold medal. Paige Gilstrap of McGregor took silver with a 163 and Victoria Gleghorn of Central Heights won bronze at 164.

Even King (184), Whitley Boyd (195), Trinday Joslin (203) and Peyton Miller (245) helped the Lady Tigers capture another regional championship.

Both the Yoemen and Lady Yoe will compete at the state tournament in the coming weeks from the Grey Rock Golf Course in Austin. The boys will hit the course on Monday, May 14 and

Tuesday, May 15, while the girls will get going to the following week on Monday, May 21 and Tuesday, May 22.
