Baseball Playoff Update
With just one week before the state tournament, there are still a few local schools that have a shot advancing on to the state’s biggest stage.
In the 6A region II final, The Woodlands (23-15) and Round Rock (32-8) will be squaring off in Mumford this Thursday (7:30), Friday (7:30) and a game three to be determined, if necessary.
In 4A, Salado (28-4-2) will get their chance at Jasper (32-6). Jasper just knocked off preseason number one Robinson in the region III semifinals. Games will be Thursday (7:00) and Saturday (5:00) in Montgomery.
In 3A, Clifton (27-5-1) will be battling Kirbyville (29-8). Clifton knocked off defending state champ Central Heights in three games last week. The series will be played in Tyler. Meanwhile, former Yoe baseball coach John Broussard and his Gateway Prep Gators (32-2) draw Bishop (26-7-1) in the region IV finals. That series will be played at Jourdanton on Wednesday (7:00), Thursday (7:00) and Friday (7:00, if necessary). While in Cameron, Broussard’s team knocked off this very Bishop team in the regional semifinals en route to their 2011 state championship.
Finally, in 2A the Thorndale Bulldogs look to cap off a very strong sports season with a trip to the state tournament. The Bulldogs (33-5-1) draw defending state champ Dallardsville Big Sandy (30-4-1). Those games will be played at Sam Houston State on Thursday (7:00) and Brenham on Saturday (2:00).
The state softball tournament is going on this Wednesday through Saturday, but no local teams are involved.
