Summer basketball/football update
Over the weekend, the Yoe basketball team played in their second state qualifying tournament of the year in Salado. Cameron rebounded by defeating Thorndale (47-40) in game one of pool play after falling to the Bulldogs in last week’s home SQT tournament. However, the Yoemen narrowly fell to Salado (50-49) while Thorndale topped to the Eagles as each team finished at 1-1.
Cameron ended up being the odd man out on points given up and finished third place in their pool. The Yoemen did play Burnet in a consolation game, but also fell there, 55-48. There is another chance to qualify this weekend in Rosebud-Lott.
The Yoe football 7-on-7 team continued their big-school league play on Monday night in Belton. The Yoemen finished with a 1-2 mark with a win over Copperas Cove and losses to Belton and Temple. Cameron will host this league on Monday and will wrap up what should be their last 7-on-7 games in Temple in Monday, June 25.
The state 7-on-7 tournament from College Station is scheduled for Thursday, June 28 and Friday, June 29. Cameron is not scheduled to compete in any other SQT and basketball conflicts will more than likely end any attempts of qualifying. The remaining division II qualifying tournaments: June 15 (Jim Ned), June 16 (Hurst, McAllen), June 22 (Brownwood), June 23 (Celina).
Since 2011, Cameron has managed to qualify for state all but one year (2014). That same year the Yoemen went on to win the state title in December.
Last sport of the the year comes to an end
Last week, the UIL state baseball tournament took place from The Dell Diamond in Round Rock and Disch-Falk Field (4A) in Austin.
In 3A, it was the Beckville Bearcats that made history by capturing their first-ever state championship in three attempts at the state tourney.
Beckville shutout Brock (4-0) in the semifinals before winning a 10-inning thriller over the Clifton Cubs, 5-4.
Clifton, which had defeated Georgetown Gateway Prep (5-2) in the semifinals, was one out and one strike away from winning the title. In the 7th, the bases were empty with two outs before a single and a two-base error pushed across the tying run. In the 10th, the bases were loaded with one out, and another error at third base allowed for the game-winning run to cross home plate.
This was Clifton’s first-ever trip to state.
In 1A, Solcum got by Fayettevile (6-3), 2A saw Dallardsville get revenge over Muenster (13-3, 5 innings) in a rematch of the title game from 2017, 4A saw Argyle (35-0) finish the season undefeated and number one in the nation (all classifications) with a shutout over Sweeny (5-0), 5A had Northwest Eaton top Forney (4-1) in a clash of Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex squads, and in 6A Southlake Carroll had no problems taking down San Antonio Reagan (7-2).
Final baseball rankings have Lexington ranked at 23rd in the state. The Eagles bounced Troy and Buffalo in the opening two rounds and took eventual state finalist Clifton to a tight three games (3-0, 4-8, 4-6).
