Summer football/basketball comes to an end

On Monday, the Yoe 7-on-7 teams played in their final week of the summer league from Temple. The Yoemen finished the day with a 1-2 record, knocking off previously undefeated Belton while suffering losses to both Copperas Cove and Temple. Cameron finishes the league with an overall record of 3-9, with two wins over Copperas Cove and the most recent win over Belton.

 

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the Yoe basketball summer team attended the Texas A&M team camp and played in several games against competition from all across the state. Cameron opened pool play with a win over 4A Anna, 42-39, defeated 2A Iola in match number two, 35-25, and fell to Jesuit in the finale, 41-31.

 

To start day two, Cameron defeated Eustace, 38-36, before falling to Ovilla Christian, 57-56, and Bland, 35-33, to finish 3-3 in pool play.

 

In the opening round of bracket play, Cameron defeated Memorial JV, 57-40, before bowing out to Commerce in the second round.

 

A total of 32 teams were included in the small school division. The Yoemen were coached by former girls basketball coach Anthony Branch, as current high school coaches are not allowed to participate in the summer programs.

 

State 7-on-7 pools released

On Monday, the pools for the state 7-on-7 tournament in College Station were released. The Yoemen did not qualify in 2018, but several local teams will be competing.

 

La Vega, McGregor, Gatesville, Lorena, Mexia, China Spring are Central Texas teams that qualified in division II, while Bremond, Lexington and Hearne are competing in division III. This is the first year for division III, which includes schools in 3A DII and lower.

 

La Vega will be in pool C with Bonham, Goliad and Rockport, McGregor sits with Brock, Snyder and Sweeny, Gatesville is placed with Cuero, Graham and Needville, Mexia has Celina, Glen Rose and Worthing (Houston), and China Spring has been placed with Bridgeport, Jim Ned and Stafford.

 

In division III, Bremond has Childress, Louise and Sonora, Lexington will go up against Lovelady, Tenaha and Wellington, and Hearne draws Brady, Deweyville and Palmer.

 

There are a total of 48 division II teams and 16 division III teams. Previously, there was a total of 64 division II teams before the expansion of divisions. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the championship bracket while the bottom two teams will have to settle for consolation play.

 

More camps coming up in July
Six camps have come and gone, but there are three more on the slate coming up in July. The second Lady Yoe volleyball camp is slated for July 24-25, with 9th-12th graders going from 8:30 am until 11:30 am, while 7th-8th graders will go at it from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
The mini cheer camp is scheduled for Saturday, July 28 from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm and will be for children age four to fifth grade. The cost is $30 and campers must register by June 28 to receive a t-shirt. A performance will be held at 4:30 pm.
The Yoe football camp is set for July 30 through August 2 from Yoe Field. Incoming third through
sixth graders will get instruction from 8:00 am until 10:00 am while the seventh through ninth graders will get their time in from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm. Cost is $45 dollars per camper and registration must be completed by July 20.
