Adele Pilling Evans

Adele Evans, mother, grandmother, and sister, died on July 9, 2018, at the age of 92.

Adele was born in Cameron, Texas, on Oct. 13, 1925, and was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church, Buckholts, Texas. Her parents, deceased, were Henry and Lena Pilling.

Adele is survived by her son and his wife, Bruce and Mary Evans of Austin, Texas,; and grandchildren, Courtney and Dylan Evans, and Eric and Caroline Johnson. Also, surviving her are three sisters, Hilda Engelke, Irma Kalmbach, and Aileen Jones and husband John Lee Jones.  Two sisters, Doris French and Mary Ann McGuire are deceased. Brother-in-law Bill McGuire, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends survive her.

She received her education at Yoe High School, Cameron, and Draughon’s Business College, Dallas. Upon completion, she moved to Austin and was employed by the State Liquor Control Board as a secretary. She worked in the District Office, the Enforcement Division, and the Administrator’s Office.  Subsequently, she worked for the Austin National Bank, and State Bar of Texas where she held the position of Office Manager of the General Counsel’s Office. She retired from the State Bar of Texas in May of 1991.

Adele was devoted to church, family and lots of friends. She volunteered at Seton Northwest Hospital, eventually holding the position of president, accumulating over 15,000 hours.  She served at Fourth Floor Courtesy Desk, the Information Desk, and in the Gift Shop.  Some of her Christian commitments were Sunday school teacher, secretary and treasurer of the Women of the Church, and member of the Alter Guild of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church.  Later she served as secretary-treasurer of Kindred Sisters and was an Alter Guild member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church.  She was a Stephen’s Minister at both St. Martin’s and Lord of Life.

Special times were had on Sister’ Days. Her family came to Texas from Germany as part of the Adelsverein, and they all could speak a pretty mean Texasdeutch.  She and her sisters gathered at Bed and Breakfast facilities and in their homes.  On these occasions, they reminisced about the hard work and endless chores on the farm, and the fun times and experiences they enjoyed growing up. Fellowship during these get-togethers included heated games of 42.  Adele was also an avid player of Bridge.  Her two-table Bridge friends met monthly for over 30 years.  She was a member of the Cosmos Bridge Club and treasurer of the Hills Thursday Bridge Group.  Last, but not least, Adele was a 50 year breast cancer survivor.

The family will receive friends at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., on Monday, July 16, from 6-8 p.m. Services will also be at Week-Corley at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, with interment at Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Buckholts, Texas.
