Paul Eugene Matocha

Paul Eugene Matocha, 95, of Sugar Land, and formerly of Cameron, died Tuesday, July 17, 2018, in Sugar Land. 

Funeral services were held July 21 at St. Monica’s Catholic Church with Rev. Dimitrij Colankin officiating. Burial followed in the St. Monica’s Cemetery.  Visitation was held on Friday, July 20, with a rosary being recited at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.

Paul was born Jan. 15, 1923, in Cameron to Boles Peter and Angeline (Krenek) Matocha. He lived in Cameron most of his life, moved to Austin and on to San Antonio. After his graduation from high school in San Antonio, he went to the National Guard and into the Army. He served 26 months in Italy and other European war zones. He was a member of the American Legion.

He married Mildred Michalka on June 10, 1945, at St. Monica’s Catholic Church.  When they moved to Austin, he became active at St. Louis Catholic Church where he was on the finance board, president of the Men’s Club and was an instituted Acolyte.  He loved camping with his wife and playing golf every Saturday morning at Lions Municipal golf course – always having the first tee-time.

After he retired and moved to Cameron, he became active at St. Monica’s Catholic Church where he was the Deputy Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus as well as the finance secretary. He also served as vice president of the KJT Society. His days were filled with cattle ranching and golf with his buddies at Cameron Country Club where he served on their Board. He was active in golf throughout his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Mildred; his brother, Boles Matocha Jr.; and his sister, Rosalie Jenkins.

He is survived by his children: Lynda Matocha Knoche and Arnold of Richmond, Gary Paul Matocha and Cinde of Spring, David James Matocha and Vanessa of Austin, Nancy Ann Matocha of Bastrop, and Kevin Joseph Matocha and Sarah of Houston; his grandchildren, Diane Knoche of Houston, Cpt. G. Daniel Matocha (US Army) and Alexandra, Dustin Matocha and Ashley of Austin, Laina Matocha of Spring, Kirby Matocha of Houston, and Peyton Matocha of Houston; and his grandchildren by marriage, Dara Kay Hofferek of Bastrop, and Zachary Reynolds of Houston. He is also survived by his brother, Francis Lee Matocha of San Antonio.
