Yoe begins two-a-day practices

On Monday, the Yoemen got the first practice of the year under their belts. As you would anticipate for the first day of action, there was a lot of excitement in the air and things went well for the group as a whole.

“It was a great day one,” said third-year head football coach Tommy Brashear. “The kids had a lot of energy, the competition was good, and the leaders were getting the people going. It was a great, upbeat practice. I’m optimistic about day two, but the trick is putting a bunch of those together.”

The numbers once again appear to be solid for the four-time state champs, whom had 102 kids out for the first day of workouts.

“We had a few guys that need to get their physicals taken care of, but overall there was a lot of energy. We had a lot of mistakes, but the kids were trying to correct each other and trying to learn from those mistakes. We are flirting with the one hundred range and that is a great number for a school our size. A lot of schools our size or some bigger than us do not have three teams and we do. That is one of the blessings of playing and coaching in Cameron.”

The Yoemen will put on the pads for the first time on Saturday during the intrasquad scrimmage. Action will get going at 8:00 am with the freshmen. JV and varsity are to follow.

Cameron will host Lorena next week in the first of two scrimmages. We will have a full breakdown of the scrimmage format in next week’s edition of sports.

Bynaum receives first football offer

Cameron athlete Davion Bynaum announced on Twitter that he has received his first offer from the University of Texas of Permian Basin. UT-Permian Basin is a division II school in the Lone Star Conference.

Bynaum impressed in what was limited time at running back last season. The senior is expected to compete for the starting running back role and should be one of, if not the fastest players in the state for class 3A.

Yoemen will not play in Mexia on week 1

The Cameron Yoemen were scheduled to open their 2018 season on the road at Mexia on August 31, but that is not going to happen. It was announced on Tuesday by Mexia ISD that their field renovations would not be complete in time for the week one opener. Mexia is installing turf to replace the natural grass surface.

As of press time, there had been no decisions made on where the game was going to be played.
