Week 2 Scrimmage Outlooks

Cameron Yoe Vs. Madisonville

Things went about like I would have expected them to in the opening scrimmage with Lorena. There were some things that definitely need to be worked on, but at the same time there were plenty of positives. My personal big takeaway was the performance of the offensive line and running backs in the ground game. Cameron’s offense will be successful if they are a true, dual-threat team. That means that there must be consistent chunks of yardage gained on the ground, which is something that has been lacking the past two seasons. Overall, all the quarterbacks did well and we should see more of each of them tonight in Madisonville. I had not seen a report on the Madisonville and Lexington scrimmage, but we do know that the Mustangs are going to put a solid product on the field under third-year head coach Rusty Nail. Nail has done an excellent job of jump-starting this program, which finished 2017 with a record of 11-2 and had a tight, third-round playoff exit to perennial power West Orange-Stark, 28-26. Big takeaways here are just general improvements from week one to week two in pads. I would like to see this ground game consistently pick up big chunks and we certainly still need to keep an eye on the quarterback position.

Madisonville scrimmage format

Cameron will travel over to Madisonville on Thursday for their final tune-up for the regular season. The freshman and JV will both get 30 minutes on offense and defense, just as they did in the opening scrimmage.

For varsity, the first team offense will have 12 plays followed by 10 plays from the second team offense. The first team will come back with 10 more plays followed by 8 more from the second team.

Each team will get one live overtime possession from the 25-yard line. Following that, there will be one, 12:00 running clock quarter.

Rockdale Vs. Mexia (at Franklin)

The Tigers showed some rust in their opening scrimmage as they trailed Groesbeck in the total amount of touchdowns scored, 3-1. It will be no surprise to see Rockdale struggle a bit early as they are breaking in several new key positions. Remember that Rockdale struggled out of the gate in 2017 but turned it on later in the season, leading to their state championship. Mexia scrimmaged Franklin last week and all reports have that going in heavy favor of Franklin.

Franklin Vs. West (at McGregor)

As previously stated, Franklin was thorough in their week one scrimmage with Mexia, reportedly sacking the quarterback “nine” times. I do actually believe that West could be one of the top contenders for Franklin when we are talking about playoff teams out of region III. It’s an early matchup, but we could see it again in November or December.

Fredericksburg Vs. Lago Vista

This is the second of two tough scrimmages for Lago Vista, which took on traditional power Wimberley in week one. The Vikings have not been the same team since Coach Haire moved on to Stephenville and now Salado, but there are not many programs in 3A that can say they have the number of kids out for football.

Troy Vs. Teague

Though only a scrimmage, Teague has been dominant in this scrimmage the last several years. The Lions did struggle in their opening scrimmage with Fairfield, trailing in overall scores, 3-1. If there was a year for Troy to try to take a step forward, this may be it, with other teams in the district having more questions than normal. We may see some of that in this scrimmage.
