Bees upend Cameron in the fifth set
Heading into volleyball action on Tuesday, Cameron knew they could be competitive with Academy, which sat at a perfect 5-0 in 19-3A play entering the night. Cameron had previously taken Rockdale and Troy - which were second and third in the standings entering the night - to five-set thrillers. That trend continued as the Lady Yoe took a 2-1 set lead over the Lady Bees before dropping the final two sets in a tough, 3-2 loss.
Academy (6-0) took the opening set 25-15, but the Lady Yoe responded with a 25-15 win in the second and 25-22 win in the third. Academy won the fourth, 25-21, and then the fifth set, 15-6.
“It’s going to be up and down,” said Cameron coach Kamol Nohe on the shifts in momentum throughout the match. “They are going to fight back and we are going to fight back, and that is the way the game goes. It’s how we keep that momentum. If we lose sight of what we’re supposed to do it’s easy to lose the momentum. But, I’m proud of the girls and how hard they fought. We went to a fifth set with a team that has beat everybody. We are playing good teams. It was so close.”
Cameron came out firing in the second set, growing their lead to 13-6 after Gracen Dach knocked home a kill. Later, a Carley Tucker kill made it 21-10 and it never got any closer.
In the third, Cameron once again started hot, jumping out to a 12-2 lead following a Lady Bee passing error. Academy responded and came all the way back to tie the match at 21 before a pair of errors sandwich in-between a Kenzee Layne and Darci Denio kill closed out the set. Nohe was happy to see how productive the entire lineup was during the impressive run.
“I was telling Coach Dickson that I need my middles and I need this, this and this to happen,” said the coach. “It makes it fun as you can see the kids are growing and are getting better.”
The fourth was tight most of the way as it was tied at 15 before Academy started making a push. Academy’s top offensive threat was captain Lillie Stewart, which finished with 23 kills on the evening, including 5 in the fourth set. Aubrey Fossett pitched in with 11 kills for the Lady Bees.
The fifth set was also competitive until Cameron closed with five consecutive errors.
