Week 5 Football Outlooks

“The Call”

Last week, Cameron played an exciting game with Giddings, which is top 10 in 4A DII. Unfortunately, the game was decided by a penalty called late in the game. On Giddings’ first field goal attempt late in the fourth, the kick had sailed wide left and it appeared the Yoemen had won the game. However, the umpire had different plans, throwing what was called a personal foul penalty for leaping over the line.

The rule: “ARTICLE 11. 11 b. It is a foul if a defensive player moves forward and tries to block a field goal or try by leaving his feet in an attempt to leap over the frame of the body of an opponent. It is not a foul if the player was aligned in a stationary position within one yard of the line of scrimmage when the ball was snapped.”

The player called for the foul was in a stationary position and was on the line of scrimmage at the snap of the ball.

Cameron Yoe (2-1) Vs. Troy (3-1)

The ending to last week’s game was tough. The call near the end of the game proved to be the difference, but you also have to look back at the extremely slow start in the first half plus the four turnovers. To make those mistakes and still be in a position to beat a highly ranked 4A team is impressive. I do believe this team is headed in the right direction and will just need to continue to grow week in and week out. Cameron opens district with what will be a playoff team in Troy. The Trojans, to me, are slightly improved this season and it has shown in their early results. With that said, Cameron has never lost to Troy and I don’t really ever expect that to be in jeopardy on Friday night.

Josh’s Pick: Cameron Yoe by 24.

Pratt’s Eats: We are headed back to the Temple area again, so if you’re eating before the game and would like something quick, stop by Green’s Sausage House and pick you up a kolache or klobasnek (meat filled). Oscar store is a few minutes more north, and they also has quality home cooking that I would recommend. After the game, you could always stop at Buc-ee’s and pick up a sandwich. I would avoid the BBQ, but the turkey melt is definitely one to try if you have not already.

Milano (1-2) Vs. Thrall (1-3)

Milano is going to be itching to get back on the field after their game with Iola was cancelled due to weather. Thrall has not been all that impressive to start the season, starting at 1-3 with a win over Moody (34-20) and losses to Riesel (27-13), Flatonia (34-13) and Hico (9-7). I do believe the Eagles can bring their record to .500 after this one.

Josh’s Pick: Milano by 3.

Thorndale (2-0) Vs. Rosebud-Lott (1-3)

No one in the state has played less games than Thorndale after not getting to play in week one and then having last week’s game with Dawson being cancelled due to weather. To put it nicely, Rosebud-Lott has struggled out of the gate. The schedule has not been all that tough for the Cougars, but they still cannot seem to find their way. That has been an unfortunate trend the last several years now.

Josh’s Pick: Thorndale by 28+

Little River Academy (1-3) Vs. Manor New Tech (1-3)

Academy has not looked good out of the gate, and if they expect to compete for the fourth playoff spot in 10-3A, this is a game they must win. Manor New Tech will more than likely finish in last place in the district as they are a new school that does not have any seniors on the roster. The results up to this point reflect how young this group is at the moment.

Josh’s Pick: Academy by 28+

Jarrell (2-2) Vs. Lago Vista (1-3)

The big surprise in 10-3A is Lago Vista and how much they struggled in their non-district schedule. Meanwhile, after winning just one game a year ago, the Cougars have already doubled their win total after just four games. But, keep in mind that Lago Vista has played some tougher teams while Jarrell has scheduled very light, with the intent to probably build confidence.

Josh’s Pick: Lago Vista by 17.

Refugio (3-1) Vs. Mart (3-1)

It’s a rematch of last year’s 2A DI state championship game as Refugio travels to Central Texas to take on the Mart Panthers. Mart won that state title game a year ago 34-21 and has actually dropped down to 2A DII this season, so this will not be a preview of a potential title re-match as Refugio remains in division one. Mart’s lone loss comes to Franklin (21-0), a much larger, and highly ranked 3A DI team. Meanwhile, Refugio fell hard to Goliad (35-0), which is ranked by some as the number one team in 3A DI.

Josh’s Pick: Mart by 10.
