Yoe rolls over Katy St. John XXIII, 48-0

Though Katy St. John XXIII was somewhat of an unknown because of their opponents, they had to be taken seriously as they walked into Yoe Field in Friday night with a perfect record of 5-0.  A short few hours later they sat at 5-1 as the Yoemen totally dominated the Lions from the opening snap to the final whistle in a 48-0 shutout win.

“I was proud of the way we came out from the beginning, playing hard and executed well,” said Yoe coach Tommy Brashear on the win.  “I'm not sure how many first downs they had, but it couldn't have been too many. We thought we had a good scheme going in, which was a similar one we had used with Wall.  The less they are thinking and the more they are playing, the better off they are.”

It was an equally impressive performance on both sides of the ball, as the Yoemen racked up 34 first half points while the first string defense only allowed two first downs in the first half.

“They looked pretty good on film, but you can't judge their play because we did not know the teams that they had went up against,” said Brashear on the lopsided stats.  “I was hoping they were a little better to push us a little harder.”

Cameron’s Nico Vargas once again had a strong showing, coming in with 7 rushes for 107 yards, two catches for 19 yards, and a total of three touchdowns scored.

“No one really wants to tackle him in open field, said Brashear.  “We get the ball out to him and let him take it down the field, running around or through people or whatever it takes.  He made a cut tonight and I was impressed because he is usually looking for that contact.”

Post Games quotes

Quarterback Braden Brashear

On the offense: “We executed pretty well.  The line made some pretty big holes for Nico and he made it easy on me.  The teams have to play the run a lot more and it opens up the passing game.  With Nico and the line playing the way they are, it opens things up.”

Running back/Linebacker Nico Vargas

On his offensive performance: “I give a big shout out to my offensive line as they did a great job of blocking for me and opening up some holes.”

Yoe defenses shutout: “The defense did a great job tonight.  We had a good week of practice and we prepared well for this offense.  It's tricky and we have not seen it before, but we played well.”

Coach Tommy Brashear

On what lies ahead: “Our biggest games are still on our schedule.  Troy was a big one, but this next game against Jarrell is a possible playoff team.  Of course there is Rockdale down the road, but we will take them one at a time and enjoy this win tonight and start getting ready for Jarrell tomorrow.”

On being able to play backups: “The backups had a few mistakes here and there, but those guys have not played a whole lot, so it was good to get them some live action.  When the starters were out, they were encouraging their teammates that were in there, and that's always a great sign when you have a team that does that.”
