Milam County Commissioners approved an interlocal agreement with Cameron Independent School District to place one of its sheriff’s deputies on the district’s campuses during a meeting on Sept. 27.
Cameron ISD Superintendent Allan Sapp said the district will begin interviews this week and hopefully fill the school resource officer position in the near future.
The agreement consists of the school district paying the salary, insurance, school related training, gas and basic maintenance of the care for the officer. With the county providing the vehicle and liability insurance.
CISD began looking into a school resource officer this summer originally talking with the City of Cameron, but that fell threw.
“School safety is on the forefront of everybody’s mind these days,” Stork said at a board meeting in July. “It was unfortunately brought too close to home recently. As Governor Abbott released his plans, we got together to see where we are at, because we want to be in compliance and offer safe facilities for our kids.”
The agreement is for one year.
The CISD board directed Sapp to look into placing a school resource officer on all campuses in June following the deadly school shooting in Santa Fe.
