Nancy Mae Martin Smith

Nancy Mae Martin Smith, 84, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the home of her son Bobby Nabours and his wife Leslie of Washington.

Services dedicated to and honoring her life were held on Monday, Oct. 29, at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple with burial in Bellwood Memorial Park.

Nancy, or "Nanny" as she was called by the great loves of her life which were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was a native Texan, born March 15, 1934, in Temple, to A.C. Martin and Johnny Mae Shipp Martin.

She is survived by sons, Billy and wife Lorna of Kerrville, Bobby and wife Leslie of Washington, and Barry and wife Sherry of Little River-Academy; stepson, Bobby Wayne Smith of Early; brother, A.C. Martin Jr. of Lake Oswego, Ore.; grandchildren, Jenifer Bubenik, Christopher Bubenik, Sarah Jo Redden, Bob Nabours, Scarlet Peralta Nabours, Barry Nabours Jr., Justina Nabours Briztine, Chelsea Spinn, and Cole Nabours; and step-granddaughters, Brandi Wilhelm and Tori Hoffman. She had 20 great-grandchildren.

Nancy graduated from Cameron High School and Mary Hardin Baylor (now University of Mary Hardin Baylor). With a degree in elementary education, she embarked on a career teaching, mentoring, and molding students. She also took much pride in helping her son’s fulfill their interest in sports and their show cattle.

Nancy taught at Rogers ISD for 30-plus years before retirement. While teaching at RISD, she received the Golden Apple Texas Teacher of the Year award. She moved from Little River-Academy to Hunt in her retirement, but later taught elementary students in Texas' smallest school district at two-room Divide School located in Mountain Home. Her love of educating children was something she could never give up and she spent her last years teaching her own great-grandchildren while in the care of son Bobby and daughter-in-law Leslie.

Nancy met and married George H. Smith in 1974. George was a stable and loving husband to Nancy for 19 years. He preceded her in death. Nancy was also preceded in death by her father and mother; first husband, Billy Nabours Sr.; sister-in-law, Sue Martin; and close cousins, Ann Vercher and George Warren Bickley.

Nancy was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It was a matter of pride that both of her grandfathers had fought in the civil war. She was a member of Charles Schreiner Chapter UDC, where she held an officer's position, and was currently a member of Sul Ross Chapter UDC #100.

Nancy was a member at Rogers Church of Christ and the Retired Teachers Association of Kerr County.

Nancy loved traveling and was nicknamed “road runner” by good friends. On many of these trips she was accompanied by longtime friend Peggy Morgan Shaw.

Memorial donations may be given to Encompass Hospice Care in Bryan in Nancy's name.
