Yoemen go 3-1 at Thorndale Tournament, fall to Hearne

The Yoe Boys Basketball team suffered a tough loss on Monday night, falling to Hearne 62-52.

Cameron was on par with the Eagles throughout the first quarter. They ended the quarter trailing Hearne 15-11, but the Eagles had a big second quarter that gave them a 10-point lead going into the half that the Yoemen couldn’t catch up to. 

The Eagles scored 24 points In the second to give them a 39-26 lead. 

Cameron would score 11 points in the third quarter and Hearne would add 13 points. In the fourth quarter Hearne would score 10 points and Yoe put up 15 points but couldn’t catch up to the Eagles. The final score was 62-52.

“We just got our team complete this week after football season,” Coach Nick Burns said. “Hearne has been out of football for a long time, so they ran over us a little.”

Burns said the Yoemen are still getting their feet under them after football season and working to get into basketball shape.

The Yoemen saw two players in double digits as senior Dre Booze scored 15 points and junior Nico Vargas scored 13. 

“We are looking for big things from both Dre and Nico this year,” Burns said. “We have a lot of returning players this year and we are looking to have a great year.”

Other scorers for the Yoemen were Za’Korien Spikes with eight points, Greg England with six points, Thomas Melton with five points, Kobe Young with three points and Kevaughn Booze with two points.

 

Thorndale Tournament

The Yoemen opened the Thorndale tournament on Dec. 6 with a comeback win over Waelder 57-48 after being down 17 at the half. They lost to Smithville 37-48 to go 1-1 on the first day of tournament play.

The Yoemen returned to action Saturday with a pair of big wins. Cameron took down the Georgetown JV 63-60 and then knocked off 4A Caldwell 55-43. The Yoemen ended the tourney at 3-1.

Senior Dre Booze was named to the All Tournament Team. Booze had three 20-point games during the tournament.

Burns said the team battled good at the tournament, but that shots aren’t falling great yet.

“We are still getting our morale back up after a tough end of football season,” he said. “We haven’t really gelled yet, but I think in a few weeks we will be on track.”

 

JV tops in Thorndale

The Yoemen Junior Varsity basketball team went 3-0 at Thorndale Tournament to win the championship on Dec. 7.
