Yoemen, Lady Yoe pick up Tuesday wins

After a break from the Thanksgiving holidays, the Lady Yoe basketball team was back in action on Tuesday as they hosted Riesel. Cameron defeated Riesel earlier this season during tournament action, 55-24.

Much like in the first matchup, Cameron came out hot and overwhelmed the Lady Indians with pressure defense. NaQuiria Gibbons and Terryn Adams both scored eight points in the first as Cameron led 18-4.  

“It was our goal this game to apply the defensive pressure right away through the press, and it created offensive opportunities for us in the transition game which allowed us to extend that lead right away,” said Lady Yoe Coach Corey Cunningham.

Gibbons doubled here total in the second with 16 as Cameron took a commanding 30-10 advantage at the half.

The ladies coasted throughout the second half to finish off the win, 46-24. Gibbons finished with a team-high 22 points.

“Gibbons is starting to recognize her own abilities more and see what the defense gives her,” said Cunningham. “She has the freedom to take what she's given and she's starting to do just that. It creates for other players as well.”

Cameron will participate in the Salado tournament this Thursday through Saturday.  

Yoemen

The Cameron Yoemen ran their season record to 2-0 on Tuesday with a dramatic 44-42 overtime win over the Holland Hornets.  

Points came at a premium throughout the entire game as Cameron led 14-13 at the half.  Holland led at the end of three (24-23), but the Yoemen tied it up in the fourth to force overtime.  

Yoe center LaRondre Booze had a big game, scoring 19 points in regulation.  

Down by two with just under two minutes left in the overtime period, Ty Moore drained a three-pointer to give the Yoemen a 41-40 lead.  

Eventually the game would end up tied at 42 with 14 seconds remaining.  The Yoemen had possession with Booze standing near the top of the key with the ball.  He found an open Danny Perez down low for the game-winning layup. 

"We really want the ball in LaRondre's hands," said Yoemen head coach Ed Glendening.  "He is our best decision maker.  I know he is just a sophomore, but I think he makes our best decisions.  We want him with the ball."

Perez finished with 12 points.  Moore had seven.  The win was the 400th in 20 years for Glendening.  

"It means a lot," said Glendening.  "A lot of that goes to my family and my wife Sharon.  It also goes to my assistant coaches throughout the years.  I have two good assistants right now in Trey and Lance, and Nick Burns last year.  It was big.  20 years and 400 wins is an accomplishment."

Cameron will be in Moody this weekend for tournament action.  The JV will be in Holland.
