Cameron Christmas Classic basketball tournament set

The most anticipated basketball tournament of the year will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday as teams from all across Central Texas and beyond come to Cameron for the Chamber of Commerce Christmas Classic. 

 

The tournament is now in its 19th year and will once again feature 12 boys and 12 girls teams.  Pool play will commence on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. and will go on through Wednesday night when the final game tips off at 7:30 p.m.  The regular high school gym, old high school gym and junior high gym will all be utilized. 

 

Boys

Pool A: Bartlett, Cameron, Marble Falls

Pool B: Giddings, Holland, Australia

Pool C: Caldwell, Taylor, Whitney

Pool D: Shoemaker JV, Smithville, Snook

 

Girls

Pool A: Cameron, Elgin, Palestine Westwood

Pool B: Iola, Rosebud-Lott, West

Pool C: Florence, McGregor, Snook

Pool D: Australia, Holland, Travis

 

All teams are within two hours of Cameron besides one - Australia.  The Australian team will be traveling over 9,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean to compete in the tournament.  Yoe basketball coach Ed Glendening posted an ad online looking for teams and got the response. 

 

The chamber of commerce and athletic booster club will sponsor an open house for the Australian team on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. from the Yoe High cafeteria.

 

“They want to come and meet new people,” said Glendening.  Members of the community are encouraged to attend. 

 

The Lady Yoe will open up tournament play on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. against Elgin in the old gym.  Cameron will wrap up day one with Westwood at 5:30 p.m. from Yoe Gym. 

 

The Yoemen will play Bartlett at 1:00 p.m. in the old gym and Marble Falls at 7:00 p.m. from Yoe Gym. 

 

Bracket play will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning.  The winner of each pool will be in the gold bracket, second place teams will be positioned in the silver bracket, and third place teams will compete in the bronze bracket.  All teams are guaranteed two games on Wednesday.  The girls championship game (5:00 p.m.) and boys championship game (7:30 p.m.) will both be in Yoe Gym.

 

Canton won the girls championship game a year ago and is not returning.  Shoemaker JV will have a chance to repeat as champions on the boys side.
