Slide continues for Lady Yoe

Down two starters due to injury, Lady Yoe head coach Corey Cunningham knows that his team has to shoot well in order to pick up district wins.

That offensive production was lacking last Friday night as Cameron shot just 26 percent (10/39) from the field and never scored more than nine points in any period in a 43-30 loss to the Lexington Lady Eagles.

Despite poor shooting on offensive end, a strong defensive effort kept Cameron (8-14/1-4) in the game most of the way. Lexington (1-4) averaged just over 10 points per period, but Cameron could not convert on the 16 turnovers they forced to build momentum.

“I thought our defense kept us in the game,” said Lady Yoe head coach Corey Cunningham. “Overall, it was one of the best defensive games we have played all year. The offense wasn't there tonight. We couldn't capitalize on the turnovers that we got.”

Lexington held a one-point lead, 10-9, after one, but the margin was extended to 23-15 after two and 35-24 after three.

“We had a goal for each quarter and we hit it each time,” said Lexington coach Britanni Kimball. “I really proud of the girls for that.”

Lady Eagles shooting guard Madison Stefek was hot from the floor in the early going, scoring eight of her 10 points in the first, including a pair of 3-point shots.

Her senior counterpart - Keanna Clemons - also finished with 10 as the two tied for the team high in points.

“Those are our two seniors and they stepped up,” said Kimball “Before the game we told them they have to score and they were leaders and did that.”

Another key disparity was free-throw shooting. Lexington shot 69 percent from the free-throw line while Cameron sat at just 36 percent.

“Ideally, we need to be around 70 percent,” said Cunningham. “We talked with the girls after the game about that. Lexington was 11 for 16 and we were 9 of 25 and that is a huge difference in the game.”

Cameron guard Terryn Adams hit back-to-back runners in the lane to begin the third, bringing the score down to it closest point at 23-21. Adams finished with a game-high 13 points and five rebounds.

Marquazia Workman had six points and three rebounds and Lauryn Leftwich had three points and seven rebounds.

Lexington shot 14-33 (42 percent) from the floor.

Rogers

Throughout district, Cameron has struggled to generate offense. That ultimately ended up being the achilles heel on Tuesday night as the Lady Eagles of Rogers had no problem producing points in a 60-14 victory.

The Lady Yoe took 39 shots on the night, but only converted on four of those shots for 10 percent shooting.

“We're still working to find our offense,” said Cunningham. “I thought we did a good job of breaking their press, but I thought we allowed them to speed us up out of our game.”

Rogers’ Maddie Hare could not miss in the first half, with 18 of her 20 points coming in the first two quarters en route to a 41-6 halftime lead.

“She is one of our senior leaders and she had a great performance tonight,” said Rogers coach Loyd Morgan. “She is one we try to get the ball to early and get her feeling like she's in rhythm. It kind of feeds off of everybody else after that.”

The Lady Eagles had plenty of production elsewhere as seven other players recorded points, including Rachel Andel’s 14.

Cameron turned some of the momentum around in the third. The Lady Yoe doubled their entire production from the first half with a quick six points in a span of under two minutes.

“We talked about coming out in the second half being more in control of the offense, and they did,” said Cunningham. “They worked the offense a lot better and found the opportunities instead of rushing things.”

Cameron recorded six points in the first and third periods while only netting two in the fourth and none in the second.

Zabrian Sowders, Lauryn Leftwich and Terryn Adams each had six points for Cameron. Leftwich recorded nine rebounds.
