City approves new stop, yield signs

Cameron residents may want to slow down when driving through the city’s neighborhoods in the future.

The Cameron City Council passed a Street Sign resolution during its meeting Jan. 17 that will place additional stop signs and yield signs at several places mostly on Davis, Cleveland, Hoover and Wallace.

The resolution was crafted after with input from City Maintenance Director Craig Arnold, City Manager Rhett Parker and Chief of Police Randy Dixon.

The resolution states: “The City of Cameron has an inordinate amount of open intersections which present a hazard to our motoring public in terms of the possibility of accidents with no traffic control to prevent such. Open intersections tend to create an increase in accidents and thus to prevent such accidents and reduce the likelihood of injury, it is recommended these traffic control devices be established.”

The following locations are where new signs will be placed:

- 14th and Davis – on Davis, yield sign

- 14 ½ and Davis – on Davis, stop sign

- 15th and Davis – on Davis, yield sign

- 17th and Davis – on Davis, stop sign

- 18th and Davis – on Davis, yield sign

- 19th and Davis – on Davis, stop sign

- 20th and Davis – on Davis, yield sign; changed from being on 20th to Davis to match all other directions of signs in area

- 10th and Cleveland – on Cleveland, stop sign

- 12th and Cleveland – on Cleveland, stop sign, convert original yield sign to a stop sign

- 14 ½ and Cleveland – on Cleveland, stop sign

- 15th and Cleveland – on Cleveland, yield sign, dip in intersection

- 16th and Cleveland – on Cleveland, yield sign

- 17th and Cleveland – on Cleveland, yield sign

- 18th and Cleveland – on 18th, stop sign, dip in intersection

- 19th and Cleveland – on Cleveland, stop sign, dip in intersection

- 20th and Cleveland – on 20th, stop sign

- 10th and Harding – on Harding, stop sign at end of street

- 16th and Hoover – on Hoover, stop sign

- 17th and Hoover – on Hoover, yield sign

- 19th and Hoover – on 19th, stop sign

- Wallace and Reenie – on Reenie, stop sign on Reenie, coming onto Wallace

- Wallace and Milam Circle – on Milam Circle, stop sign

- Wallace and Country Club – on Wallace, stop sign

- Wallace and 12th/Hoover – on Wallace stop sign

- Hoover and Burkett Circle – on Burkett Circle, stop sign

- Hoover and Hefley Place – on Hefley Place, stop sign

The council also ordered the May 6 City Council Election during the meeting. Places that are open on the council are Ward 1, currently held by Maurice Goza; Ward 3, currently held by Robert Davis; Ward 5, currently held by Vergie Hardeman; and At-Large, currently held by Melissa Williams.

City Secretary Amy Harris said that packets are ready and City Hall for anyone to pick up from Jan. 18 to Feb. 18. Early voting will begin April 24.

In other business council also: Approved a request for the use of Ledbetter Park and permission to place banners for the Cameron Fun Fest to be held May 5-6; approved a resolution authorizing the submission of the 2017-18 Texas Community Development Program Application; heard reports from department heads; Parker told council that the TML Region X meeting will be held at The Yards of Cameron on March 22; and approved expenditures and the December 2016 financial report.
