Yoe baseball finishes strong in Marion tournament
Service Directory
After dropping the first three games of pool play in last weekend’s Marion and Navarro tournament, the Yoemen closed on a high note by winning their final two games to finish with a 2-3 mark. Cameron now sits at 3-3 on the season. Below is a capsule from each contest.
Game 1: Navarro (L 3-0)
Cameron began tournament play with quite possibly the most talented team in the field with 4A Navarro, which entered the season #15 in TxHighSchoolBaseball.com’s preseason poll. The Yoemen fell behind 2-0 after one frame and could not get the offense going in a 3-0 loss. The Yoemen’s lone hit came in the top of the 4th, when Jason Llanas singled to right field. Navarro added on one run in the fifth before the game was called in the sixth due to the time limit. Anthony Layne and Ty Moore gave up only 1 earned run apiece on their time on the mount.
Game 2: Lago Vista (L 6-5)
The Yoemen’s second game showed no relief as Lago Vista - the number one team in 3A - awaited. The Vikings were hot out of the gate, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after three innings of play. The Yoe bats got going in the fourth, with a 5-spot to tie the game up. Bryce Welsh began the inning with a triple, which was followed by a Bryce Brashear double, Alex Alonso single, Moore single, Layne double and Caden Harris single to knot the game back up. The Vikings recovered with 1 run in the bottom of the fifth right before time had expired. Brashear pitched 2 innings, giving up just 2 hits, 0 runs while striking out 2.
Game 3: Devine (L 11-3)
Cameron gave up 7 runs in the third and 4 in the fourth in a 11-3 loss to Devine. Jordan Young was the hard-luck pitcher to take the loss on the mound. The senior tossed 2.2 innings, giving up 7 runs. However, only one of those runs was earned as the Yoemen had 4 errors in the game. Leadoff hitter Andress led the offense, going 2-2 with a double and 2 RBI. Brandon Wilkins was 1-2 with the other RBI for the Yoemen.
Game 4: Luling (W 17-0)
The Yoemen took out frustration in their third game in a 17-0 blowout win over Luling. The Yoemen, which had scored just eight runs in the last 3 ball games, scored 17 in just 3 innings of work. 10 different batters record hits in the game. Harris had the big knock to jumpstart the offense with a 3-run home run in the first inning. Brashear finished 2-3 with two doubles and three runs driven in. Llanas also had a multi-hit game with a pair of singles. The sophomore also threw all 3 innings, giving up 2 hits and striking out 3.
Game 5: Canyon Lake (W 6-4)
In the finale of the tournament, Cameron jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Canyon Lake and held off a late comeback in a 6-4 win. Llanas, Harris and Brashear all walked in the first inning before Young singled to give Cameron a 1-0 lead. Up 2-0 in the second, a wild pitch and double from Harris brought in the third and fourth runs. Welsh bumped the lead to 6-2 in the fourth with a double to center, scoring Andress and Llanas. Alonso pitched the first 2.1 innings, giving up 2 hits and 2 runs while striking out 2. Llanas closed the game out with 1.2 innings of relief, striking out 3 while giving up no earned runs.
